An error occurred with your upload. Please try again.

Hi,

Today I tried to import my ~3 years worth of data from Fitbit. Unfortunately, I can only export a single month from Fitbit :-( They do allow a complete export, but it comes in a different zip/json format which then cannot be imported on Garmin side. This is very disappointing as I was under the assumption that all my history can be imported...

I then tried to just import a single month using the csv import. But also that failed with just a rather unspecific error message "An error occurred with your upload. Please try again.". Is there a known problem? What can be done? Is a full zip/json import planned?

Best regards,

Stefan

  • Not sure what and where you tried importing the data, but if you are using the page https://connect.garmin.com/modern/import-data, then please read carefully the description on that page:

    You can import:

    • Garmin Activity Files (.tcx, .fit or .gpx format) Learn More
    • Fitbit® body or activity data (.xls, .xlsx or .csv format). Learn More

So no zip files. CSV files are either for body data (weight, etc), or activities (a separate file)

  • After fiddling around quite a bit, two things I found out:

    1. I had to use the "to" date in Fitbit two days before my first data in Garmin appeared (e.g. I bought it today and started using, so I first tried to import data until yesterday. But that is not far back enough, I had to select today -2 days).

    2. Only Activity and Sleep data worked for me.

With those adjustments, I was able to import the CSV exports from Fitbit. But I did not found a way to import a larger timespan than one month, so I had to do some clicking... :-(

  • Yeah I was trying to import CSV. Body data actually did not work for me... As soon as I disabled Body data, things started to work :). Activites definitly worked, and steps/activity data are now visible in Garmin. Sleep data I also exported (and was in the CSV) but it seems that the import ignored this data.

  • Yes, body and activty data must be in separated files. I edited the original post accordingly.

  • Thanks, yeah would be good if Garmin writes a bit more what is exactly possible/works...

  • I kept having the same issue but solved this problem by changing my Fitbit language to English (it was in Dutch) and then import in Garmin Connect with the same language and also to check if the date is shown correctly. On my CSV file the date shows 01-12-2020 so on the import settings the date should be set the same

  • I literally exported a .csv file from a Garmin Connect account from one of my Garmin Connect accounts, then switched to my other account and tried to upload it, and I got the error message "An error occurred with your upload. Please try again."

All of the data came from a Garmin Edge 530.

I'm not changing the data from a non-Garmin format.

I'm using all their tools on their site.

    Still, the functions don't work.

Does anyone have a solution for this?
Garmin Forums keeps referring me to discussions and threads from 6 years ago that are all shut down now.

  • I exported a .csv file from my Garmin connect account and then tried to import into my new garmin connect account and I got the same message.  Any idea why their own tools aren't working to export/import?

  • I exported a .csv file from my Garmin connect account

If you are trying to import activities, then only FIT, TCX, and GPX files are supported, as stated on the import page. I recommend using the FIT file format (when exporting, it is the "Original" option). Only the FIT files (Garmin's own data format) contain all the data. GPX and TCX files contain only a limited subset of the original data. CSV files are useless for the transfer of activities. The CSV is supported only for activities from FitBit, in their format.

  • why does Garmin's export function export the files as .csv?  Is there an option to choose to export the activity data as one of the formats that Garmin requires for importing activities?
