course - running - virtual partner

Hello,

I run.  I have a Forerunner 645/M.

I think the Garmin Connect "Course" feature applies primarily to Hikers and Cyclists with turn by turn, and maps.

I'm not sure if my idea on training better makes sense using a course. To wit:

I have a five mile neighborhood loop I run a lot.  Yesterday on Garmin Connect I created a course of this loop.  I added to "peaks" because it is really hilly, and also I selected mile markers. Then I added to my watch. Today I went out to the starting point....I selected the "run" activity, then went to setting, navigation, do course,  and there was the course.  I clicked "do course" and took off.  Because I wasn't sure how it all worked, I clicked "start" for my run.

At the end of the course the watch flashed "course complete" then I pushed "stop" for my run.  So that's that.

How does a runner use this course to compare efforts? To target pace going up hills?  To use virtual pacer?  Or am I just fundamentally not getting how a 'course' could be used for running/training.

The Map and the Turn by turn of course are not important, because it is my neighborhood loop.

Ideas? Suggestions?

Thanks.

  • Have a look at Segments, it may be better suited for your purpose. Individual activites can be then ranked and compared. Either for yourself only, or you can view also public leaderboards, or leaderboards of selected groups, you are a member of.
