Ok,

In short, I am from Ontario Canada, and I work in law enforcement, am an avid outdoors woman, and hunt and fish regularly. 2 years ago my family pitched in and bought me a Garmin Foretrex 401, awesome little unit and I was so excited. I had some troubles so I never got to take it out. Fast forward to now, brand new, in the box, I open it up because this week I am heading up north for a very long shed hunting trip where I need this GPS to keep me safe. I put in the batteries and it works great, I watch a few videos to get familiar with it. Today, less than 24 hours after my last test it refuses to turn on. I plug it into the laptop and update the software. Nothing. So I pull the batteries out and the bottom metal piece that holds the batteries in goes flying. I recover the pieces to find that the bottom holder is broken, likely why it would not turn on at all because the batteries cannot get their power to the device.

I am really frustrated as I know my trip is now a bust without a good GPS, but I feel ok because I assume Garmin will help me out, it is brand new and cost about $500 CAD.

NOPE! They tell me they will not even look at it without me sending them $200 dollars, ARE YOU KIDDING ME!? It is brand new this is a defect, they say their warranty only lasts a year, this thing never even left my house! I honestly don't even know what else to do, other than leave this here and call until someone from this company steps up and gets this thing fixed.

My trip is gone, and I will be warning people not to buy these GPS units as the company won't even step up to fix something that broke IN MY HOME. It has not even been in the woods with me. I have heard other people with this type of problem, company refuses to fix something that is not the users fault. Had I done something to damage it or had it for years with good use I would totally understand and pay to have it repaired. Not the case.

  • I feel your pain, but I think you are overreacting a bit. You cannot blame Garmin for refusing the warranty if it took 2 years before you tested the device. It is not their fault you did not use it all that time. However, if it is just a piece of metal that fell, bring it to a local repairman, he maybe be able to fix it for a few bucks.

BTW, I hope you did not you let the AAA batteries in the device during the 2 years, or even just inserting the old batteries after that time. Batteries corrode, and after a longer time may start leaking electrolite which is very agressive and possibly could have caused the damage on the metal holder. Not telling it was really the case, just that it could be a possible explanation of the mishap.
