Export "Garmin Connect Course" --> and import to --> "Strava Routes"

Hello all,

Is it possible to build a Course in Garmin Connect and then import this into Strava as a Route?

In my humble opinion, it feels easier and more powerful to build courses in GC as opposed to using the Strava Router Builder Beta interface. With that said, I like to ride Strava live-segments so I"m using the "Strava Routes" Connect IQ app so I get live-segments and turn-by-turn nav together.

Yes, I can build my routes in Strava but my preference is to build courses in GC as I prefer the user experience.

Thanks in advance!

  • I agree with your observation that the Garmin Connect course creator is much better. Getting this over to Strava is not easy and requires a multi-step workaround. Best way that I can see would be to create the course in GC, then convert it to an activity by running it through the plotaroute site and import it as an activity back into Garmin Connect. Then once the GC activity has synced with strava, from the strava site convert that activity to a route. Keep in mind that this would skew your Garmin Connect metrics as it would not be a "real" activity that you actually ran. So you would probably want to delete it from Garmin Connect once you've gotten the activity over to strava.

Other than that, you can convert an existing activity in strava (yours or someone else's) to a route.

thanks so much for the help :-)

I just created an account on plotaroute and was successfully able to upload my GC course (as a .gpx file) to plotaroute but how do I go about "running it through the plotaroute site"?   I can see AutoPlot by Bike and a play button but I'm not sure if I'm going about a rabbit hole.  Thanks again for helping a newb.

    cheers,
    Dave.

  • Ok, I just tested this and there is no need to import back to Garmin Connect after exporting from plotaroute.

    • Create course in Garmin Connect
    • download gpx
    • From plotaroute select Create >> Upload a route >> Choose File that you downloaded from GC, click Upload
    • From the menu on the bottom right corner of plotaroute click on "D'LOAD"
    • Leave all the options as is with their default settings, then click download
    • From Strava manually upload the activity that you just downloaded from plotaroute
    • Choose files, select the downloaded GPS from plotaroute
    • Click save and view
    • Create a route from the context menu, click save
    • Go back to your strava feed and delete the "fake" activity
  • I also tested just downloading the GPX file from GC, skipping all the plotaroute stuff, then importing into strava. Seems to work but not sure how that's going to work with strava live segments.

thanks so much for the detailed insructions!  I was going to message you back that I tried skipping the whole plotaroute process and I was successfully able to get the route created in Strava.  It does show segments below this route too so perhaps live segments will work with it but we'll have to test with an actual ride. thanks again!

  • Sounds good. I had to make sure I deleted the strava activity before I got flagged for running a sub 2 hour marathon. Astonished

    lol, you're one fast runner!

I uploaded my activity (.gpx file) to Strava with "Only You" under Privacy Controls on the Upload and Sync page. Then after I created a route on Strava based on my activity, I immediately deleted my activity.  Good call on deleting the activity right away so you don't get flagged by Strava.

    - please let me know if live segments work for you with this streamlined approach of skipping plotaroute. I'll also report back my experience as well on this thread.
