How to override auto-detected resting heart rate for a day

Hello fellow runners, my question is related to incorrect auto-picked resting heart rate value for a day. I went sleep with wrist HR sensor off and turned it back on when I noticed that its not working (mid-day). Garmin registered a huge jump in my RHR 54 -> 68, which messes up my charts. Obviously in this case automatically picked up value by Garmin is incorrect, so is there a way to override it for that particular day (ie. use previously available value or ignore the whole day)? I don't want to permanently set my RHR in settings or anything like that. Just fix 2 times this happened to me in the past.

I have Forerunner 245

Thanks, Nik

  • I don't know of a way - but have never searched for one either.

Anyway, what I can tell you is that the watch can also pick up your resting heart rate during the day. And during day it has a less strict measurement protocol, so the day result can actually end up lower than the night result. This happens quite often to me.

I am not sure about the exact protocol, but I think I read somewhere that the nightly measurement takes an average over several hours, while the daily measurement is the lowest average, which has been measured over a duration of 10 minutes during the day.

So put your feet up and relax for 15-20 minutes, and you will probably see your erroneous resting heart rate "repaired" automatically.

did you ever fix this? Ive just seen of jump from 42 to 57 mainly caused by having just over 4 hours sleep

I deleted the data for a whole day because I wasn't doing any activities anyway. In case of 4 hour sleep, I would not worry about a value being slightly higher, as in most cases it's a correct value measured during that period. I notice slightly elevated resting HR during the nights when I sleep around 4 hours and also during that day. Garmin does not pick the lowest value for RHR, I think you need to maintain that low value for some period of time in order for algorithms to save it as RHR.

Thanks, it did drop to 45 during the day so was fine as average for 7 days back to 42. I'd hadn't realised you can delete the data, that's a cool feature if I want to let my daughter try out my Garmin for the day. How do you do the delete?

It's located in Garmin Connect web interface under "Daily summary", you just have to find that day and click on the gear icon on the right -> Delete.
