Missing feature: manual elevation correction

I have recently purchased a Forerunner 645 and I am very happy with it. There is however an issue I found - the barometric altimeter is very unprecise, despite I frequently set the elevation manually, thus I often get very unprecise elevation data registered on an activity, which for me is a big gap living in the mountains, where elevation matters. In order to mitigate this issue, I would suggest 2 very useful functionalities in the Garmin Connect Web app (and in the mobile app as well)

1) ability to manually edit the elevation - it would be enough to indicate the correct starting elevation, and a simple function should only linearly shift all elevation data according to the manually adjusted value

2) ability to equalize the elevation of start and end point - as very often start and end point are on the same location, but often the measured elevation differs (also quite significantly) between start and end point, a simple function to indicate the correct elevation of the starting point, and optionally adjust the elevation data in order to get to the same elevation on the ending point as well

Both functionalities were available with my previous Polar bike computer (which was by the way more precise in measuring the actual elevation) and I used them very often

Thank you and best regards

  • Open the activity in Garmin Connect Web, and on the right side, below the notes and device info, you can see the option "Elev Corrections", which is by default disabled at devices with an altimeter, but when clicking on the option, you can enable it instantly.

  • Thanks for your reply, however this does not sound like the solution to what I was looking for. My Garmin has a barometric altimeter, thus I want to use this to record the elevation data, however, this is not always very precise, and I need a way to manually edit the altitude data in the activity page, as I explained in the issue description. Elevation Correction does not allow to manually edit the data of an activity, and from the description of Garmin it seems an alternative for devices without barometric altimeter.

  • Well, as I wrote, you can correct the elevation data from the altimeter of your device either by the Elevation Correction, which adjusts the elevation using the Digital Elevation Model, and it should be pretty accurate, unless the GPS position is competely wrong. If that is not sufficient, you can export the activity in one of the available formats, and edit it either in a text eiditor, or in any other editor suitable for the respective file format. The easiest would be probably using the TCX file format, which is easily human-readable and editable with a plain text editor like Notepad, or with any HTML / XML editor. After editing, you can remove the original, and import the edited version.
