Calories burned not capturing workout calories.

Former Member

My calories burned are not capturing my workout calories. I ran 8 miles yesterday and burned over 1,200 calories but my calories burned yesterday are only 1,110? I synced, turned off phone and restarted, nothing is helping. Any ideas what to do?

  • I’m having the same problem. Why is it happening? Very frustrating, plus during workout sometimes my Garmin just reboots and loses all the current workout data. Extremely frustrating.

  • Post some sample data, so that we can have a look at it.

As for the rebooting - verify that the storage is not full. If it is, delete old activities from the folder //GARMIN/Activity/. Check for new firmware with Garmin Express, ask on the forum dedicated to the watch model you own, or contact the Customer Support.

  • I tried posting photos but the forum won’t allow me. Never mind, I’ll just ignore that feature. It’s too bad it’s not very accurate.

It is accurate, you just probably do not know how it is calculated.

Total Calories burned during an activity = RMR for the time of the activity + Active Calories

Garmin does not use BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate). They use RMR (Resting Metabolic Rate). It is slightly higher than BMR. If your RMR is 1800 kcal, and the activity took for example 85 minutes, the the passive part of the activity calories would be 85*1800/(24*60) = 106.25 kcal.

The rest are the Active Calories, but the daily total of Active Calories include not only the logged activities of given day, but also any other kind of energy burned over the RMR - coming from all the physical and mental activity during the day. Hence the daily Active Calories are always higher than the sum of the active parts of Activity Calories (unless you do a 24hr activity).

Please note, that you have to strictly differentiate between Active Calories (calories burned over RMR), and Activity Calories (all calories burned during an activity, including RMR).

It is all explained on Garmin's website too: https://support.garmin.com/en-US/?faq=lkl4cwCLlK7ox362uGQEV7

  • I understand all of that, but my swim states on my garmin I burned 1300 calories but in the calories burned column, it only reflects 300 active calories and 100 resting calories. That doesn't add up.

  • I am afraid I need to see the data. Insert the screenshots here using the function Insert » video/image/file » upload. Use Chrome or IE, if your browser does not show that options.

  • I am unable to upload the photos. I just won't use that feature anymore.
