Intensity Minutes and External HRM

Recently completed a row on my Concept2 rower which recorded my heart rate. After synching the data to Garmin Connect, my workout summary shows 90% of the workout (~45 minutes) was either in Zone 3 or 4 (split about evenly). Despite this my Intensity Minutes is still at 0. Will the external data imported to Garmin not count (i.e. does it need to be logged from the Vivoactive 4)?

So far when rowing I have found the HRM on the watch to be inaccurate which led me to purchase the chest strap. For instance when my heart rate was at 140 on the strap, the watch was showing 79 (I did not have an activity running on the watch).

  • Will the external data imported to Garmin not count

No, they won't. You need a HRM belt that is connected to your watch. The intensity minutes are being calculated on the watch, not on the Garmin Connect account. Imported HR will be ignored.

Well that's annoying. The Ergdata App provides much more info than tracking the activity with my watch. :-/

  • Why not pair the external HRM with your watch?

Edit: Right, probably you want the data from the ErgData App I now realize. Well, maybe you can let the external HRM connect to both the rower and the watch? You'll get two activities, though. However, it seemed your first setup was with only the watch (where you found the oHR unreliable) so by having the HRM belt connected to your watch you would be as you started, but with reliable data.

  • I have this same issue. Rowing with my Garmin HRM Dual connected to my PM5 works perfect, and the data seems to be transfered to the Garmin Connect App without any problems - but it doesn’t count against the Intensity Minutes. Why is that, and what Can I do?

  • You need to use a Garmin device supporting the feature of Intensity Minutes - either a Garmin watch or the HRM-Pro chest belt. HRM-Dual does not support that feature.
