Adding the courses widget to the Web / Android app

I have recently purchased an Edge 520 Plus hoping that i could create cycling routes / courses using my PC and download them to the device to follow. I'm having issues with the very first stage, however!

From hours of Googling I understand I need to add a Courses widget to the web dashboard / App dashboard but on both web and mobile the "three elipses" icon doesn't reveal any options to add anything like a Courses widget.

Maybe I misunderstand the purpose of Connect - I assume the Garmin connect web page is the environment where I should be able to create map-based routes? I have used Strava to create a few routes - is it just easier to export these and drag them into the device's Garmin folder?

  • You can create a course in Garmin Connect Web in two ways - either you go, on the left menu, to Training » Courses, and click the blue button Create Course, and then draw it on the map. Alternatively, you can turn an existing activity into a course - on the screen of the activity, click the cogwheel (up right), and select Save as Course. Please note, that the activity must not be private, otherwise the option will not be available. You have to make it visible minimally to your connections (click the lock symbol).

On a phone, you can use the app Garmin Explore, for creating courses / tracks.

  • Yes, what said. Also, it's not necessary, but if you want the courses widget added to your Garmin Connect dashboard...

    • Select Courses

If you have any courses they will then appear in the courses widget. You can create a new course by clicking the plus symbol in the top right corner of the widget.

Thanks for the replies, but I'm still stumped. On the web, the Courses link under the Training group isn't there:

And on the dashboard, the widget selection isn't there:

Prior to buying the Edge 520, I was already using Garmin Connect for a Vivosmart HR band, so I the Courses option wouldn't have been required at that time. I suspect the options have failed to update after adding the Egde 520 Plus.

I might try to create a second Garmin Connect account for the Edge to see if that sorts things out. Not ideal, though, as it would be nice to manage them from the same profile.

  • And when you added the Edge 520 to your account, it is shown as having been added? When I added my latest device - FR945 - I got a whole slew of additional content in the app and web that I didn't previously had.

Listing devices in Garmin Connect Web

Maybe you could also try to go directly to the Course page - the choice in the navigator just directs you to a URL. https://connect.garmin.com/modern/courses

  • Do as I wrote, in Garmin Connect Web, select an activty, share it with your connections (or more; see the lock symbol), and then save it as course (see the cogwheel symbol). You could also set the privacy setting to some level of sharing in your user profile. Course should be then visible in the menu.

Hi Trux - Followed your instructions, Save as Course is greyed out, but interesting so is Send to Device. Must mean there's an issue with how my profile sees the Edge, and whether its a suitable destination for the file.

When I get home, I'll de-register, factory reset just in case and re-pair. Let you all know how it goes...

I do not think it is needed. More likely you do not have enabled some of the options for Device Upload and/or Data Storage & Processing in Privacy Settings.

Thanks for the link, olni65, thats a huge help. From that link I've been able to import Strava GPXs, edit them and save them under the Garmin account. I just need to see if I can transfer these to my Edge later today. As you say, if its only a URL launch then I stick it on a Chrome bookmark...

  • Just for fun, I created a test Garmin account. No activities, no courses, and no devices associated with this new account. Regardless, I was still able to see the courses option in the menu and able to create a courses widget.

Also tested in several different web browsers - IE, Edge, Chrome, Safari. Firefox as well as different computers on different networks. Since this is the subject of this thread, I'd like to see if there is a reason for this. My guess at this point is your Garmin account is muddled up. So if you create a new account and it works, you could get with Garmin support to fix your original account. This is assuming you want to keep using it.

Ok I think this is now resolved. I removed both the Vivosmart and Edge devices before registering them both again. I found that if I added the smart band first, I had the same affect i.e. no courses. But if I added the Edge first then then band it's all good. Thanks to everyone for your support.
