I want to download the GPX for an activity from 1 July 2016. How can I easily get to old activities? If I try to search activities for "1 Jul 2016", it doesn't find anything. If I go to calendar by years, and back to 2016, I can see that there was an activity on 1 July, but I can't actually access so that I can download a GPX. Is there any alternatice to laboriously scrolling down and down and down through six or seven hundred activities until I get back to that date?

You can also filter activites in the https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activities by date, but first you need to select which type of activity you want to limit the filtering to. Running, Biking, Swimming…
What type of activity is it? In the view settings, expand "Activities" and make sure that you have that activity type listed and ticked.
Access via the calendar doesn't work for me. In the year view in the calendar, it shows me the days with activities - here is July 2016:
I want the activity for 1 July, so I click on that, and it switches me to the month view:
However, the activities are not there in the month view, and there is no way to select one.
Your second suggestion, though, does work. By filtering to cycling activities, I then get the Advanced button, and can select a date range.
