I agree. I’ve used Apple Watch, Fitbit and Garmin and this is the one shortcoming of Garmin. I want to be able to log my naps for records sake. They really should fix this.
The only recommendation…
Plus One. Would really like the option of manually editing the sleep to add the number of hours napping or subtracting the time when I am awake in the middle of the night. Great suggestion.
Absolutely, Please GARMIN you guys need to fix this! I really have no complaints except for the sleep tracking and not being able to track napping....
Certainly I may be wrong, but personally I doubt quite strongly that with a simple HR and acceleration sensor you could ever distinguish between sleep, reading, tv-watching, yoga/meditation, and other similar activities with low HR and motion patterns. On my mind, you might need quite a more sophisticated equipment, like EEG, for achieving it, so I am rather sceptical that the sleep detection could get much better with the current technology. Even the oximetry, that is available with the newer models, cannot really help much, since the breathing and oxygenation patterns may be quite similar to sleep in many other situations too.
Not that it doesn't have false detections, but many Fitbit devices perform auto-sleep detection. My experience was with the Ionic, and I had very few false detections outside of my configured sleep times. Now, they do occur when I'm reading during configured sleep time.
So, it is possible to auto-detect with the limited hardware.
Well, I do not use to take naps, so cannot reffer whether they can be detected or not, but as for the standard sleep detection, my Garmin Instinct works flawlessly, and records the sleep data even if I go to sleep or wake up much before/later than the predefined time. And it never records sleep data in the predefined time interval, unless I really sleep. So in fact it looks like the pre-defined time is not that important.
Maybe I'll try to take a nap during the day to see whether it gets recorded too.

The only recommendation I can give for now is to go to the Apple Health app and log your naps manually, but it doesn’t show up in the Garmin App, so it’s not a very good solution.
All that said, Garmin really needs to step yo their game on this one.
