Map not showing

For the last few workouts Connect isn't showing the map on the dashboard. It was fine up to late November, when I had to take a break due to injury. Now that I'm back in action, there are no maps. I've not changed any settings or the way I use my device, a 920xt. All other data is present. I think the device software is current, it installs updates every now and then.

Is it just me, am I doing something wrong?

  • Are you speaking about the Activity screen, or really the Dashboard? Personally I never had any maps directly on the Dashboard, always only on the Activity screen.

  • Both. It's as if the device didn't map the run.

  • Are other data, like the elevation, HR, pace, etc. there, or is more of it missing?

Check the settings of the activity on your watch (go to the activity, long-press the menu button, choose Activity Settings) and verify whether GPS is enabled. When you start the activity, after selecting it on the watch, wait till there is the checksign for the GPS signal, and only then start the activity. Do not forget to save the data once you finish the activity.

GPS can be also turned off in power-saving mode, when the watch is low in battery power.

  • It's all there, including distance (and the all-important beer tracker). When I start a run I wait for the GPS bars to show and the message that it's ready. I've just double checked and GPS is enabled. It's clearly recording and measuring, but for some reason the map doesn't show on Connect. Maybe I've inadvertently switched it off on Connect but darned if I can see how or when. I'm puzzled!

(Thank you for trying to help, I appreciate it).

  • (and the all-important beer tracker)

Damn, I don't have that. How to get one?

the map doesn't show on Connect

Did it disappear from the past activities too, or only since certain date?

  • You could try doing a quick dummy outdoor activity now (just assuring the GPS is on, starting the activity for a few seconds, moving a few steps, and stopping, and then importing the activity with the USB cable and Garmin Express instead of BT and Garmin Connect Mobile of the phone. Shut down the phone before the testing to avoid it starts syncing before you can do it. With this method you can exclude that the data is missing due to dropouts during the BT transfer.

You could also post a screenshot of the activity screen, so that we can see better what's on. Is there a blank space instead of the map, or does it look like at indoor activities? Is the map missing also in Garmin Connect Mobile?

  • Well, I did the helpdesk standard reply of "turn it off and back on again". And the map is back for a short test walk but not for the previous couple. I'll keep an eye on it but it seems that the problem, whatever it was, is solved.

I use this beer tracker (others are available, just search on ConnectIQ for "beer"!) apps.garmin.com/.../cb51f0b9-6836-4856-a4f0-4c18e61cf08c

The same happened to me. The recordings from late december 2019 to mid january 2020 are all without the maps uploaded, both on desktop Express Connect and mobile version Garmin Connect Mobile. There are also no possibilities to download the GPX from the workouts. Before and after the mentioned dates everything was/is OK. I am using Fenix 3 HR, software version 9.40.

I am sure the GPS during the recordings was ON, because I have permanently turn it ON. Also all other data were recorded (distance, elevation, pace,...). In my oppinion there were some problems connected with Garmin.

I have the same problem with the maps no longer showing up.  Please advise what you did by "turn it off and back on again" to correct the problem.  Thanks!

  • When the maps stop showing up at activities, then the most common reason is that the GPS was not active because your ephemeris data file expired or is damaged. Connect the watch with USB cable to the computer, and check for updates with Garmin Express. You need doing it regularly - GPS cannot work reliably and quickly without fresh ephemeris data.
