Garmin Coach Paces Too Fast?

I started up a Garmin Coach 5k Plan (McMillian) and the paces seem too fast.  In the description of the Steady State run it says it should be a moderate effort.  However, the pace it is giving me is too fast - for me it's basically running a mile as fast as I can, and it's a hard effort.  I have the plan set to a somewhat ambitious goal but I do have 20 weeks and the confidence level it is showing is high.  When I export to Strava it thinks that my easy runs are tempos.

There doesn't seem to be a way to adjust the paces down and the plan hasn't been adjusting them down even though I am rating the workouts as harder than they probably intend the workouts to be.  I feel like I am going to get burned out fast, especially on the long runs.

As a new runner (2 yrs) maybe I don't see Easy/Moderate/Hard the same ways as everyone else?

The only other thought I had was that since it's a more ambitious goal it is using that goal to set the paces even though its quite a ways away.  Maybe I should do a shorter 5k plan for an intermediate goal and then another shorter 5k plan for the final goal pace.  (I'm currently 5K in 32 minutes, aiming for 28 minutes 20 weeks from now.  I could do a 10wk 5k plan for 30 minutes and another 10wk 5k plan for 28 minutes.)

Thanks!

  • Yes, the paces are determined of your goal pace. You can change your time goal and it will adjust the paces of your runs, might take a week for it to do this as sometimes the already created workouts are not adjusted.

  • I feel just the same. The fast paces are fine, but the easy runs and long runs push me into zone 4. I am happy with the top end, and my time trial is fine, improving well, but having one day of hill repeats followed by a long run of 12 k that is do tiring that I sleep for three hours in the afternoon cannot be that good for me.
