Request: Graphical Representation of Workout Targets Should Show Upper + Lower Limits

Quick issue summary: For workouts like running, the graphical representation of workout target as displayed on the Garmin Connect mobile app and website is inaccurate if there are upper/lower limits to pace.

Detailed issue explanation: I often create workouts with a specific pace target set between two paces. For instance, in the workout shown below, the target for the third mile is between 6:30min/mi to 6:45min/mi.

However, when looking back at the completed workout online and in the app, the target pace is displayed as an average of those two upper and lower limits (6:37min/mi.). The problem this creates is that when I look back at the workout to determine whether I was able to stay in the target pace zone, using the graphic isn’t enough to make that determination. Pace is sometimes on the average line, but (in this particular instance) it generally stayed within the lower and upper limits of the workout I designed.

In fact, the graphic Garmin Connect produces is actually misleading since it seems that any pace between the average of the upper and lower targets and 16:00/mi would be considered within the workout target.

To the team at Garmin: I would recommend the target pace show both the upper and lower limit of the target pace. Something like the edited graphic shown below would be more appropriate. This clearly shows where the limits are on the graph and will enable users to more easily analyze their workouts.

My apologies if this request had been posted elsewhere, but I was unable to find something similar upon a quick initial search.

  • I don't even see the option to overlay with the workout target (your first picture). Normally though I always have some element of warmup/cooldown in the workout, with no targets at all. Do you know if you get your overlay option only if you have targets for all segments of your workout?

  • This overlay automatically shows up on the pace chart if you have specified targets (and cannot be turned on/off). Without a target, the overlay will not show.

  • I guess that answers my question - I DO have targets for my "sprint" parts of my workout, but for my resting periods and wu/cd parts I don't. So I will assume that all segments need to have targets, or else none will show up. Because I hope that it shouldn't be dependent upon the Garmin model, I'm currently using a Fenix 3?

  • From my experience, not all parts of your workout need to have pace targets for the workout target to show on the graph.

For instance, in the screenshot from the workout below, I specified a warmup in Zone 3 for the first mile and last mile and a half. You'll see the pace graph contains no workout target in that section, but the heart rate graph does (incidentally, this has the same visual inaccuracy as the pace graph: Zone 3 is a specific region of the chart — it is not the entire range of heart rates between 0 and Zone 3).

You'll see the pace graph does have a workout target between mile 1 and mile 4.5. There's no workout target on the heart rate graph, because my workout target is pace-based, not heart rate-based.

For these workouts, I am using a Forerunner 935, but I wouldn't think this is hardware dependent. My guess is that something in the workout setup might not be specified (just a guess — you could have everything right). In any case, hope this helps.

  • Hm... Could be that my workouts are "wrong", but here's an example of a workout I did lately. My guess is that you need to have some target, like yours based on heart rate zones or other. For me, the wu/cd and rest doesn't have any at all.

    The workout template

    Actual workout done

No grey region in the chart. I will experiment and set some target for those parts where I haven't today, and see if it produces another result. Too bad I didn't even know that the possibility existed, would have been nice to see at a glance whether I met my targets.

Otherwise my plan is to invest in a new FR945 coming (black) Friday, maybe that will give me the desired output! Hugging

  • Good suggestion - I too have found the current representation lacking, I like the idea of shading the target region.

We could do with the same change in the mobile app too.

  • Did a test today, having defined a new workout in GC -

A very simple workout, but I can not see any change in my pace or heart rate charts and the awaited grey region of the targets.

I can only assume that it does not work together with the Fenix 3 watch.

  • I asked for it half a year ago.

Since they brought us Garmin Coach, it would be even more important because it affects more user.

Did you use their ideas submission form?

  • I hadn't, but I found the submission form and have submitted it — thanks for letting me know about it.

It's really unfortunate that this change wasn't implemented when you suggested it. Making the data visualization more logical would definitely benefit the new Garmin Coach users as well!

  • For these workouts, I am using a Forerunner 935, but I wouldn't think this is hardware dependent.

Turns out that it must be, because yesterday I did a workout using both my old Fenix 3 and my new FR945 - one on each wrist. Exactly the same workout sent to both watches from GC, and sure enough when looking at my workout from Fenix3 there's no workout target being shown in the charts (as before) while on the activity recorded with the FR945 it does appear.

My guess is that it's something introduced together with the Garmin Coach feature and are handled by those watches supporting that functionality.
