Privacy Zones, would like clarification on who they effect.

It states in the description:

Create a privacy zone around an address, such as your home, to hide your start point on publicly shared activities

Does this mean it only hides that from those looking at a shared activity without an account? Or does it also hide from connections / groups?

I'm thinking of getting more involved in connections & groups, but I want to keep my home / work locations hidden from even those. I want my home / work locations visible to me and me alone, nobody else.

  • You're right, the description is not clear.

To be sure someone should check this using 2 accounts, and check how it shows: activity's path on a map, and segments.

Or the safest way is to start/stop an activity (or disabling GPS) some distance from your location.

  • I know it works as intended when viewing an activity while not logged in. I'm just wondering if it also affects activities when being viewed by someone who is one of your connections, or in a group you're a part of. I'm hoping it does affect both of those, but going by the phrasing I've got a feeling it won't. Hoping someone who already has connections or personally knows people in groups can check this for me so I don't have to create a secondary / dummy account.

  • I was hoping someone else could answer and I could avoid creating a dummy account and potential unwanted emails that often come with those. Nobody had the information. So I created a dummy account and tested it out.

Those in a group you're part of do NOT see inside your privacy zone.

Connections you create with other accounts do NOT see inside your privacy zone.

This is exactly as I want it to perform. It now amazes me how many people don't have these set up for the groups I'm in. How many people actively share their start and end points.

I'll now happily continue with Garmin Connect and not worry about Strava or other third party products, as I was preferring to do.
