Outdated OSM on Garmin Connect (Web)

We keep getting updated OSM maps on the devices but Garmin Connect (web) still uses a very old version with many trails and streets missing.  Will Garmin ever update it? It's a little annoying looking at your activities seeing paths in the middle of nowhere even though OSM has all the trails.

  • It makes perfect sense that they cache their copy of the OSM data, but failing to refresh that data frequently makes a good trail running watch a lame trail running watch. Trail data changes often. Trail runners can't count on signposts or cell signals. They need a watch that can give them accurate turn directions at a glance.

Thank you Strava for bailing Garmin out.

  • True, OSM is better for forests and similar, other maps usually have only general paths on such locations and often not so accurate. Not all areas are covered on OSM, but everyday users add more and update existing paths. It's useful also on urban areas, as users add data about road-works and update streets.

So, would be better to update a cache more often, to use that potential.

  • I'll have to bump this thread up. This issue is still present in Garmin Connect (web). OpenStreetMap is ridiculously outdated. In the area where I live in Finland the map must be at least three years old. There are quite a many new roads and forest pathways that are missing. Every other site that uses OSM update the map data multiple times a year, but Garmin has been very lazy on this the whole time I've had Garmin products.

  • My original comment is over two years old now, and Garmin STILL hasn't updated their OSM data. So lame.

  • Strava is also useful for this. They seem to keep their OSM data fresh. I've seen them incorporate OSM updates that are less than two weeks old.

  • They update about every 4 years, a number in the link is about when it was done (the data is a bit older, last one was from 08.2019):

    • connectosm16.azureedge.net
    • connectcache20.azureedge.net

So you're in luck - a new update should be quite soon!

BUT currently they linked back to connectosm16, so instead of an update you got a downgrade! But only on Courses, on Activities it's still connectcache20.

  • Hopefully they can increase the update frequency, as also in my area the maps are incredibly out of date...

  • This thread is now 4 years old and Garmin still did not update their OSM maps. Incredible. Same applies for Garmin Explore btw.

  • Yup. And the maps were old... WHEN THE THREAD STARTED. It's ridiculous.
