A way to complete Training Effect for third party apps?

Hi,

I ride and run on Zwift and also use my Garmin "Training Status" (Aerobic / Anaerobic etc..) to have a look on my global training.

I saw that Zwift Activities doesn't have "Training Effect" so I made some searches and found that it's about "FirstBeat" etc etc so OK but, is there a way to manually set the intensity of my Zwift trainings inside my Garmin "Training Status" because I made Intervals on Zwift and there are not updated to my Anaerobic State which is a little bit disappointing to really follow my progression.

Thank you for your answers

Johann

  • There is no way to do that. Unless you register your activities with a compatible garmin device, you get no training effect/status.

  • I too have just noticed the lack of 'Training Effect' data from Zwift indoor cycling activities. I'm going to try recording these activities using my Edge 1030 & see if the data then becomes available (I think it's the VO2 max data that's missing). However I'm not sure if this will as work, I came across this snippet on Garmin support artical https://support.garmin.com/en-GB/?faq=apva7Th82K6Mm0zY4shzD6

"Recording an activity using an indoor activity profile does not generate a VO2 Max measurement".

I think this is something to do with inaccuracy of calculating VO2 max training indoors?

  • I think it's the VO2 max data that's missing

No, it's not VO2 max that's missing, at least not directly. It's the "training effect" that's missing. Training effect is not calculated by garmin connect. It's calculated by a compatible device. No training effect will be awarded unless you record your activity on a device that has the training effect feature. Zwift does not have it, obviously.

  • So, I also use my Garmin Edge 820 when using Zwift to get my Trianing Effect

  • Thanks; I have just stumbled across this thread on the forum which seems to cover the situation nicely...

    https://forums.garmin.com/apps-software/mobile-apps-web/f/garmin-connect-web/146721/training-effect-and-status-from-3rd-party-apps

All a bit frustrating, but I guess as pointed out, GC Training Effect is free, if I want a nice, joined up solution I'd need to pay for a Training Peaks subscription!

  • Hi Folks-

I am wondering why my zwift cycles are not showing training effect on garmin connect.
I have an elite suito and ant+ garmin hr showing all details of my cycle, hr, power, garmin cadence sensor etc . Yet when it syncs to my strava and garmin it says my event has 0 impact. I assumed this was as i didnt have hr linked until recently and got an ant+ device to link my HR band (more accurate than the fenix 5 hr?).

I have a garmin fenix 5 and it records a lesser set of data. Just HR and duration of exercise and of course it shows i have anaerobic and aerobic values. :( I would prefer to have all coming from the one zwift cycle. Surely with height and much more details such as speed and cadence the training effect will be much more accurate.

Apologies- to add an other option- I have an edge 520+ that i could try instead of the fenix 5- but I think zwift if doing all the hard graft and edge 520+ wouldnt give much more than the fenix 5.

As explained in the other thread you cross-posted to:

You'll have to ask Zwift. The Training Effect data is not calculated by the Garmin Connect app, or on Garmin's server. It is calculated on the device. If you use a Garmin device compatible with the Training Effect feature, it delivers the VO₂Max and Training Effect data to Garmin Connect in the FIT file when syncing to the app. And the same is supposed to happen when importing the data from 3rd parties like Zwift, but apparently Zwift does not supply the TE or VO₂Max data. Ask them if they could add it.

I wonder if this is going to change now that Garmin acquired FirstBeat who they had to licence the training metrics from (hence it was covered in the device cost) which is why it is only calculated on the device. I am assuming they can now analyse all activities as there is no longer a licensing issue?

  • But if Zwift don't pass on HRV in the FIT file that is transferred to Garmin, it will not be possible for Garmin to establish TE. From what I understand, the problem lies with Zwift, not Garmin...

True, they might not be able derive every metric but they can do most Training Load etc. The trouble is they don't do anything with 3rd party rides which makes their training stats useless. I use Xert and they can derive everything from files received from the various platforms, as long as they have power and heart rate, cadence etc. I would stop using Xert if Garmin was able to give you a complete picture.
