Is there a way to flag an activity to distinguish between a harder workout and a regular training run?

There doesn't seem to be. I don't want to bother setting up "workouts" unless it's a lot simpler than it sounds like, which is that I have to set up all my intervals and rests in advance. I just want to go to the track and hit the lap time at the start and end of every interval and then be able to tell Garmin Connect that it's a workout. Ideally I'd like to see the color coding on the calendar screen (by far the easiest screen for looking at overall patterns), but if I can't get that, I at least want something other than free form text or examining paces to indicate that it's a workout.
