How do you link and activity to a training plan?

Is there a way to connect an existing running activity from today to a scheduled training run on a training plan?

I went for a run this morning and it didn't register correctly. Now they aren't linked and saying I haven't done my training run. Other apps you can link on desktop.

Thanks in advance!

  • Garmin Developer Virtual Conference 2020please add this feature! This is important for those of us who forget to select the appropriate workout!

  • Is there a way to take a completed activity and link it to my training plan? Seems like this question has been asked a lot... is there a way to do a feature request with Garmin??

  • I have the same issue which means that the problem is still unresolved.

  • Unfortunately, my workout did not start up during my half marathon race so I recorded it as an activity. I already saved it from unassigned to training but it still does not show up in my training plan.
There seems to be a possibility to do this on Android phones. Does anyone know how to do this in the iPhone app or on a Mac?

  • for what it's worth... I did a 5k training plan and race day was yesterday. I set up a workout where I could do 2.5km out and 2.5km back because the actual race was cancelled due to bad weather (thinking this would count as completing the 5k Training Plan). However, the Training Plan "race" was still showing up in Garmin connect and the Plan remained incomplete.

I really just wanted to mark the Training Plan as complete at that stage so I could start a new one... so I ended up finding the Training Plan "race" on the watch, started it and did my shopping :-D Later, I was able to delete the activity and reject the personal bests (you do a 5k very fast while driving to the grocery store!) The "race" stayed on the calendar, but the training plan is still complete ... and I was able to start a new 10km training plan.

The user experience around this functionality seems a little strange... and maybe a little buggy or unfinished. I think it could be resolved by allowing users to associate any activity with a training session. Or - simply by allowing users to mark a training plan as "complete" rather than just "pause" or "quit" - after all, the user knows whether they achieved the end goal or not... the watch and software is a tool - not the training plan police!

  • I'll post this again, because it seems that it's lost in the thread and others have not noticed it:

So my wife came up with a workaround after not setting her correct training run tonight.

Take note of all of the parts of your activity (total time, distance, min max cadence, HR, calories etc). Don't bother noting individual lap info as you can't update it.

Start your training run activity on your activity tracker (watch, bike unit etc)

Lap through the steps in the workout by just repeatedly hitting the lap button until the workout is complete.

Save it with no details and let it sync to Garmin connect.

Go back to the app and edit the activity. Update everything you can with the details from your original activity.

This should satisfy your coach and let you move on to the next scheduled training program workout.

While this may not be an ideal solution, Garmin coach does recognise the activity and works off the averages.

You can choose if you want to delete the original activity (or just remove the duplicate against your gear if you want to keep that up to date.)

They need to let you link an activity to a workout like Strava does.

Hope this helps some of you.
