Is "Running Efficiency" something Garmin calculates/displays in Garmin Connect?

I've read a lot about "Running Efficiency" but I can't find that in Garmin Connect. Is it in there somewhere?

(Or is this more of a watch issue? Fenix 5S Plus)

Thank you!
  • Garmin performance metrics are licensed from Firstbeat. They do not provide a Running Efficiency calculation.
  • if you mean something like running power. that is a data field you can download from connect iq store. (made from garmin laps) you need a HRM-RUN/TRI or pod for this.
if you mean something like running dynamics (VERTICAL OSCILLATION, GROUND CONTACT TIME, ETC...). you need a HRM-RUN/TRI or pod for it.
  • Right, I suppose "Running Efficiency" can be defined however one wants to.

For me, it would be something like how much of ones total effort is used to move oneself forward (rather than up/down), and what % of calories expended are used to move one forward.

I suppose something proportional to power, inversely proportional to ground contact time, oscillation height, etc. No way to account for flailing arms I know, so it can't be perfect, I know!

I use Stryd, I've posed the same question over there, I'll post back here if they have anything like that.

  • i know what you mean. i open the pace graphs and overlay it with heartrate und "garmin running power (ciq)" so i can see, if i can see, how much "power" i need on a specific pace and how my heartrate is.
  • The good folks over at Stryd say this is on their drawing board, iirc they plan to have a RE display this year
  • For Stryd, you can use Running Effectivity (which is defined differently from Running Efficiency). It is your velocity in m/s divided by your specific power in W/kg. Stryd don't calculate the metric for you, but you can calculate it yourself from Stryd data or install a data field on your watch which can calculate it - for example Datarun Premium.
