Initial sync of Forerunner 935 to Garmin Connect (Android) hangs / broken

Forerunner 935 software version: v12.20 (b1542b4)
Garmin Express on PC version: 6.12.0.0
Garmin Connect Android version: v4.15


Problem:
Initial pair to Garmin Connect on Android goes into endless Sync. I have let the Sync run for more than 24 hours and it hasn't finished yet.

Actions taken:
- Master reset (steps below) Forerunner 935
- Do the initial setup on Forerunner 935 (age/weight/hr range/etc) and SKIP the pairing to mobile phone step.
- Register Forerunner 935 to Garmin Express (via USB) from a PC and run complete FULL SYNC (until there are no more updates available to sync for the Forerunner) and Disconnect from PC.
- At this point the Forerunner is UP TO DATE.

- Uninstall Garmin Connect from Android phone

- Reinstall Garmin Connect on Android Phone - v4.15 as at 13'th Feb 2019.
My intention of reinstalling Garmin Connect on the phone is to ensure there are no corrupt data or whatever bad data left behind from any previous state.

- PAIR Forerunner 935 to Phone Garmin Connect. Run initial sync and Sync is still running after more than 24 hours. The following image shows the status of Garmin Connect Sync after 24 hours (https://pasteboard.co/I0TJjF6.png)


What else can I try here? I'm about to raise a support case with Garmin Support.

  • Hmm, my first thought was that there might be a corrupt activity, but you seem to have taken care of that. However, just out of curiosity, have a look in your Activities folder and see if there are any activities in there. If there are, copy the folder and its contacts to the desktop, then delete the contents of the folder on your device - leave the folder. Then try again.

    Thanks for the reply.

    I can confirm that the 935 has NO activity - remember the device has just been 'master reset' and then was updated via Garmin Express on a PC and then paired with Garmin Connect Android - this is where the problem begins.

    I have been fiddling with the device today and I think I can narrow down the issue to Strava live segments. I have about 84 starred Strava live segments in Strava. The segments are syncing fine to my edge 510 and 1030 device but for some reasons they don't sync well with 935.

    I have opened a case with Garmin Support. will share the findings to this forum but I would welcome any advice you have.

    Ok I can confirm now that the STrava Live Segments feature was the culprit to the whole saga.

    I turned off Strava Live Segments feature on Garmin Connect (Android) via Settings -> 3rd Party Apps -> Strava -> DISABLE Use Strava Live Segments - then 'infinite' sync went away on the forerunner 935. I was able to sync the 935 to Garmin Connect this morning within 15 seconds.

    I don't need Strava Live Segments on the 935 but I do need it on my Edge 1030.
