Forerunner 735XT - unable to send workouts to device.

I've just bought a new Forerunner 735XT and I'm struggling to get my workouts in the calendar in my Connect app on my phone to send to my device. I've tried via phone and laptop and follow all steps just fine but then watch says "waiting for data" on the calendar screen. Any ideas please because this is an essential feature for me.
There are two separate calendars on the FR735XT. One is a normal daily business calendar, like one you use on your phone or computer, and it's accessed via the calendar widget on the watch. I'm assuming that this one is telling you "Waiting for data".
And then there's the Training Calendar. You access it by going into the menu, then select "Training" and then "Training Calendar".
