Approach X40 Custom Fitness Activity

CONNECT on my phone will allow me to create a custom activity - name it - categorize it. My Approach x40 watch does not expose this activity as a choice. Only RUN, WALK, BIKE, CARDIO and OTHER are presented as valid ACTIVITY choices. What is the purpose of creating an activity on my phone and not have access to it on my DEVICE?
