Sleep analysis

I know that a Garmin big weakness is the sleep analysis that is far and far away from Fitbit, but I want to share in this post my experience in order to give Garmin maybe some data to think about for an improvement.

In the pictures (sorry for the Italian language on them) there are the two graphs of tonight sleep from my Vivoactive 3. This night was not very good for me because I spent lot of time completely awake (I’m sure because I looked the time in the watch) but Garmin state that I was awake for a total of only 18 minutes most spent at the end of the night. I provide also the HR graph to complete the picture.

There were two windows of time completely wrong:

1[SUP]st[/SUP] from 2:00 am to 3:30 am: I was completely awake for about 1 hour and I got out of the bed twice (the two peaks showed on the movement graph) but according to Garmin the total amount of time awake is calculated in very few minutes (about 5)

2[SUP]nd[/SUP] from 4:00 to 4:30: again I was awake for about 20 min but according to Garmin the amount is only 1-2 min. The reason could be in the fact that my HR was very low but this does not mean that I was asleep.

According to me, Garmin do not fully use the HR variations as do Fitbit and put a threshold on movement to high. Of course I’m not a technician but for me Garmin have to put much more effort on sleep analysis if want to reach Fitbit in this area (for sport, step/floor counting and app, Garming is a step higher)

  • I've got the identical issue also. I was awake for a couple of hours last night, including getting up and walking around. Immediately this morning, Connect correctly showed my sleep at around 6 hours with a large block of awake time.
When I checked tonight the data had been reprocessed (I presume) and Connect showed me as being asleep most of this time. Something is going on with whatever "extra" analysis Garmin is doing. ciq.forums.garmin.com/.../1436564.jpg

I think it's fair to say that these so-called 'advanced sleep tracking' features are less advanced, and more seeking parity with what's already on offer from other wearables, specifically Fitbit and Polar.
