I've read that a lap can be converted into a segment but I have not been able to figure out how to do it. When I go into the make a new segment section on Connect, the lap markers are no longer shown. Perhaps it can not be done?
I would think that converting a lap into a segment would be a good feature. Very difficult to place the start and end markers at the correct locations on the map. I guess the only solution is to start a new activity just for the segment.
I just read Strava does allow laps to be converted into segments but that will require premium membership.
I'm grateful that, so far, Garmin has not instituted multiple level of membership with some of them requiring a paid subscription. Having been in IT my whole career, I'm happy to work within limitations of systems and platforms, especially as a freeloading user who doesn't pay for the service expressly and separately from any other purchase.
Apparently, the FIT File Repair tool will let you open a FIT file and export it based on selected lap(s), but it's not free. Then you could import that FIT file (as long as it doesn't have the same start time as your activity) and create a segment from that. But that would cost money and be pretty inconvenient. http://fitfilerepairtool.info/]
The weird thing is Strava users asked for this feature (convert lap to segment) and claimed that it worked on Garmin Connect before.... I also don't see anywhere on that support thread or anywhere else on Strava where that mentioned that new feature, but it would be cool if they added that for premium.
One free possibility would be to: - Export activity from GC as TCX (which is a big text/XML file). - Delete unwanted laps from TCX. Each lap is section of the file, so it's pretty easy. I recommend Notepad++ (which lets you automatically collapse or "fold" sections), or Sublime if you're on Mac. - Reimport TCX
