"Lightning bolt" in battery icon on German 50 GPS - won't hold a charge

I have a Garmin 50 GPS that I bought in July, 2017. We were getting ready to take a trip and went to try it out. All that showed up on the battery status icon (in the right upper corner of the screen) was an empty battery symbol with a lightning bolt. Tried charging it for several hours with no luck. It works when it is attached to external power (car or wall socket). It will not come on on its' own.

I'm assuming the battery is defective? Kind of hard to believe after slightly over a year of service. It has worked fine up to now. It was stored carefully - no heat or adverse conditions.

By the way, it was utterly impossible to find out on the Garmin website what the lightning bolt symbol meant.
  • The lightning bolt on an empty battery icon should mean that the battery is empty and being recharged. There are a few things to take into account on that model.

    1. It really needs to be charged from the car's cigarette lighter. USB charging doesn't work very well and takes forever.
    2. Turning off the GPS properly requires a long press on the power button on the back. A short press only puts it into sleep mode and the battery continues to drain. Even if you charge the GPS fully, if you don't long press the power button, the battery will drain in a day or so.
  • Good advice. If you need any further help please contact Product Support as this is a device rather than a Connect issue.
