Give us a Custom Activity type capability, already!

This section of the forum has lots of requests for new activities (including at least one of my own). I'd still like Snorkeling (which is significantly different than SCUBA...), I'm not sure why there aren't simple entries for standard and recumbent bike machines (is that supposed to be Indoor Cycling? What the heck is Virtual Cycling?), and lately I've been back into Pool Running which isn't super common but has been around for decades, at least. So instead of having all sorts of people requesting their own random things, why don't you just let us create our own? (!?)

Because, really, Wing-Suit Flying?!?

Because the activity type and subtype are written into the activity record's FIT file as numeric values, and the meanings of those numeric values are then to be determined by look-up against the FIT File Specification. Your personal and arbitrary choice of activities – including room to add to it willy-nilly – cannot just be accommodated in a file format specification or technical standard. Even if the FIT File Specification allowed for, say, three numeric values corresponding to User Defined Activity Type 1, User Defined Activity Type 2 and User Defined Activity Type 3, and each Garmin Connect user is allowed to maintain a table of private labels as to how each of those types would be presented, there would still be an issue where a entry in that table is subsequently changed, and causing old activity records to then be displayed with the ‘wrong’ activity type.

Yes, I understand you were expressing what you want. You can't have it. Asking why is only going to get you an answer/explanation why you'll have to live with not having it.
