Dog tracking

It would be nice to be able to somehow add my dogs to Garmin Connect while using the Alpha system. Being able to track their mileage and exercise data, on multiple dogs, would be very useful. Especially for competition training.
  • Add each dog as Gear in Garmin Connect

I see what your saying and it would track overall mileage if dogs were run individually. Two things though, 1- there would be no beak down of stats by day, week, month, etc. 2- I am running the dogs all at the same time, loose. More energetic dogs run more distance when loose, then less energetic ones.

The Alpha system will track each collar's distance traveled per day. This is something I could track by logging it somewhere manually every time. It would be nice if I could upload the data from the Alpha to Connect. From there, data from each collar (each collar assigned to a dog) could be broken down, mileage totals by day, week, month, year, etc.
  • joshtee, considering that you cannot even segregate data from different Forerunner or Edge devices concurrently registered to your Garmin Connect account for the purposes of reporting by period, it just isn't going to happen for ‘things’ that aren't even an extension of the account user.

I think that's the direction technology will head in the future though, in order to support location sharing in rural areas where we don't have good cell service/internet. The Alphas do the same thing that these devices do, for example, just without the mesh network: https://www.gotenna.com/pages/gotenna-pro-markets. The main difference is marketing. The lack of mesh networking with the Alphas is not a bad thing, necessarily, as it to gives the Alphas some advantages (e.g. much faster transmission rate). The main difference is in Alphas being marketed for dogs, rather than a more generic situational awareness sort of product. In the ideal case we'd be able to consolidate data from other users (or dogs, I suppose) via radio within Connect. That would be really powerful for wildland firefighting and similar natural resources fields. I'm being wishful and thinking beyond our capabilities to develop something like this. But, Garmin has a solid product in this line and I/we've used them in enough in all seasons in a variety of non-canine applications to know they work great for those other things. They're non-trivial professions/applications. So, probably at least worth pondering what might be possible in the future, I think.
  • Really useful to know where my puppy is. He loves getting away from me when he finds something interesting to sniff or chew on! It's been a blessing having him around as I lost my mother recently, and this was a gift from my sister to make me feel better. I never knew much about dogs, so this site was crucial for me as they offered some great advice on raising them correctly and avoiding misinformation from other sites! I was about to feed him with food that is not for puppies, and he could end up to the veterinarian if I had done so!
