Finding a watch/tracking a runner...

Hello board,

I am trying to find a way for my family to see the location of my watch when going on a run or just in general. I do a fair amount of canyon running and would hope that there would be a method for them to see my location in the event I got hurt and unable to make it back.

I have the Garmin Forerunner 230.

  • What you have is a GPS receiver, not a transmitter. Your forerunner provides GPS positioning data for you to view but does not transmit it anywhere. However, if you can run with a Bluetooth connected smartphone, and have good reception, you can use Garmin's "live tracking." From the Forerunner 230 manual.
LiveTrack. Allows friends and family to follow your races and training activities in real time. You can invite followers using email or social media, allowing them to view your live data on a Garmin Connect tracking page.

Being in a canyon, not sure of the quality of the cell signal you'd be getting. So your results could be spotty at best. If you really want something that is made for this, then look into getting something like an inReach.
