Allow custom pool size to be less than 18 yards

I do laps in my 11 yard backyard pool so it would be nice to be able to track my workout accurately. I have a forerunner 935.
  • There have been request to allow smaller pool sizes for years, here on this forum, and still it stays at 17m/18y, which means there is a reason for it.

Can't imagine what that is other than stubbornness, so since I swim laps in my 13-yard pool all of the time with Forerunner 645M. It always counts the lengths correctly with it set to 18 yards, but of course the distance is off and I have to use a 3rd-party tool to correct.

I think Garmin just put a stake in the ground here and refuses to change it for no good reason unfortunately.
  • That it works for you doesn't mean it works for majority. I suspect that for competitive swimmers shorter pools do not allow to collect enough samples to detect swimming style and/or make out separate lengths reliably enough. That is my guess, which has speculative value only and you don't have to accept it.

One more thing to consider. Some time ago suunto watches allowed shorter pools, but then increased the minimal size to 17m. Don't know about the limit in current suunto line-up. Just for consideration.

Good Point. I still think Garmin could allow shorter lengths will a foot note stating lengths less than 18 yards may not accurately count lengths.

It is just very frustrating to have always update the GC FIT file using SW Tools, but unfortunately, that still doesn't update the data on the watch.

I have had the Apple Watch 2, and still have a Apple Watch 3, and both of those allow you to configure pools to shorter lengths and they are accurate.

Not a problem for me in the Fall/Winter when I swim in a 25M pool at the Y, but would rather swim in my own pool in the summer to avoid the crowds. For me, my 42-foot pool is still OK for swimming laps .. but I am slow .. around 2:00/100Y.
