Garmin Gear - not displaying properly

So I have two bikes. I have my Ride 500 as my default bike and my Scott Addict 20 as my other bike.

When adding gear to an activity is defaults to 1 (the ride - presumably as there's visible linking of a number to a bike). When I click the gear on the activity it seems two things are wrong.
1. It allows me to select both bikes - this doesn't seem right
2. When I deselect the Ride 500 and select the Addict 20, the number on the activity still stays at 1

It seems to have allocated the mileage properly - but I'm confused why it shows the number 1 when you deselect one bike and select another. I'd have thought one bike would have an ID of 1 and the other an ID of 2 and so on - otherwise when I look at my rides they'll all have the number 1!

Besides - where is there even sense in showing the number - why not just show the bike you did your ride on?

Anyone else having a similar issue? Is there an official word from Garmin? A fix around here somewhere? Am I actually using the Gear tool wrong?

Thanks
  • The number you're seeing is not an id. It's the number of gear items assigned to the activity. So if you have only one bike selected, then the number will show 1.
  • Thanks tmk2.

That seems odd though. Why would I have 2 (3, 4 5 even) bikes on a ride? And even if I did, I'd surely want to be able to say the split in mileage between the gear listed on the ride - given you can set mileage "limits" for your gear?

But I'll take it at face value - it's at least less confusing, if kind of nonsensicle.
  • Why would I have 2 (3, 4 5 even) bikes on a ride?
Nobody said all the associated gear items have to be of the same type (i.e. bicycles). You can associate (a particular pair of) shoes with an activity. You can even create gear items of type ‘other’ to track mileage on specific components on your bike, and use that as a means of reminding you to service/replace those components.
  • Ah.I see.

Ok - I'm sold on what's going on.

I found the gear reporting in Garmin Connect disappointing as well. I also use two bikes, with both separately profiled and recognized in the Edge 1000. Would most favor seeing the bike used reported in the activities cumulative ride tabulation, but would settle for it in the individual ride summary/report in lieu of the (useless, to me) number (all ones) of pieces of gear. Also frustrated by the cycling gear default feature, which attaches all cycling activities to one or the other bike, not the one actually ridden and recorded by the Edge. If neither bike is set as default, then all subsequent activities are omitted from either bike's stats. Why such simplistic limitations?

Not on subject, but another peeve: why still no grade/slope metric in GC? Their abandoned Training Center had it. Backward progress!
