Creating a Custom Indoor Row Workout - Why Can't I Figure This Out?

Is it possible to create a custom workout for an unconnected (dumb) indoor rowing machine?

I'm trying to make an interval workout and the only way I can figure out how to do so is by making a custom workout. After importing that to my device (Vivoactive 3), I find that I can't even open a workout during the Indoor Row activity screen. Instead, my custom workout appears under the run activity.

Is indoor rowing cripple to where you can't perform workouts??
  • I can only tell you how it works on my Fenix 3. I will assume it works the same way on your watch, but you will have to test that yourself:

When I create a custom workout in Garmin Connect, I can choose between 5 fixed categories (running, biking, etc.) and one user-defined category. Not all of those categories will download to my watch, since not all watches support all categories.

When I have downloaded a workout to the watch, I cannot start it from within an activity. I can only go the other way around and first select the workout and then select the activity type to be used for recording the activity.

Each of the workout categories only gives me access to certain activity types. For example, if I select a workout which was defined as a run workout, I can select between the Run, Indoor Run and Trail Run activities.

To be able to select the Indoor Rowing activity, I need to define the workout as user-defined. Then Row Indoor will be accessible in the list. But Run will not be accessible.

This is actually quite annoying since I have some heart rate based workouts that I use across different activity types. I have to define these workouts for each activity type, even though the content is exactly the same. But that is how it works.
  • Allan, thanks for the advice. I contacted Garmin chat support to inquire about this, because I couldn't get it to work the way you suggested.

Garmin told me that the only devices that support non bike/run/strength workouts are the tri-series watches.

Vivoactive users are out of luck on this. Honestly kind of infuriating for them to cripple this feature on the the lifestyle and running watches.
