Garmin Connect - Forerunner 305 stopped syncing

About two weeks ago my ForeRunner 305 stopped syncing via Express to Connect.

Both the device and Express say they are successfully syncing, but new runs have not appeared on Connect for two weeks. It's like Express is not syncing with Connect.

My runs are have stopped appearing on Garmin Connect. I use Express to sync. The Forerunner says "transfer complete" and Express says "synced just now". Connect says "Synced Jun 9, 2018".

There are a several runs since then that have not appeared.

I tried stopping Express and the Garmin Device Interaction Service, then renaming C:\ProgramData\Garmin and starting again, adding the Forerunner again as a new device and re-entering the Connect credentials.

I contacted Garmin support a week ago but got response apart from the automated email.

Any ideas?

For the last couple of months my Forerunner 305 has also had a lot of issues syncing to Garmin Connect. I run Windows 7, and used the following key sequence to look at the upload folder and activity logs from Garmin Express:
    1. Start menu
    2. (windows key)+R
    3. Type in %ProgramData%
    4. Press Enter (Run)
    5. Folder: Garmin
    6. For the upload folder: Garmin/CoreService/Devices/(bunch of numbers)/Sync/Fitness History
    - or for the logs, Garmin/Logs/Express

I kept seeing some kind of error in the log when it tries to upload the runs, something like this:
    2018-07-14 13:04:00.9837 | 29 | E | Could not upload files. Failed to enumerate files.
    GarminMode.IoLinkException: TransferFitnessHistory Failed[File: IOU_UsbLinkImpl.cpp at Line: 506]
    -or-
    2018-07-10 13:40:57.2529 | 2 | E | App | Exception thrown by unobserved task.
    GarminMode.IoLinkException: TransferFitnessHistory Failed[File: IOU_UsbLinkImpl.cpp at Line: 506]

Roughly 19 times out of 20 it would fail to upload and after some combination of uninstalling/reinstalling Garmin Express, Soft Reset on the Watch, Disconnecting/Reconnecting the cable, Removing/adding the device onto Garmin Express, it would finally work.

Quite frustrating, but then at some point any combination of the above didn't work. I finally did a hard reset on the watch (wiped all the personal data), and that helped, but it only worked once. The next time I tried to sync, I got the same issues again.

The current solution I have is that I uninstalled Garmin Express and installed an old version of the software, version 5.5.0.0 (I downloaded it from: https://garmin-express.en.uptodown.com/windows/download)

It seems to be working fine now on the old version of Garmin Express. Hoping there is a way that I can keep running the old version of the software without automatic updates, because I plan on sticking with the old watch for as long as it it and I keep running.

Hoping that this post helps someone who is starting to feel insane for trying the same thing over again expecting a different result.

tldr; Forerunner 305 seems to work best with old versions of Garmin Express.

Thanks for all the above guys. Just the last month I have had the same issue.
My workouts would upload after a hard reset, but after doing this twice I guessed something else was up.
I do find that deleting the history before every run is working but last night I forgot to do this , so it was back to banging the table/pc/watch/cradle
    this morning !
I'm gonna install version 5.5.0.0 this evening when i get home and hopefully that will solve it.
The 305 is such a great work-horse, it'd be a shame to have to change to another model.
    Thumbs up !!

To other posters - I was finally able to come up with a workaround. I hope garmin posts an older version of express for download until they get this resolved and I hope they stop forcing updates without an option to cancel.

It sure seems like a bug in their latest release of Garmin Express. I wish Garmin would retract this release until fixed or at least stop forcing updates.

I had a year old install file on my PC. Once older version was running, activities synched first try.
The express software made it difficult to do this because it always wants to update to latest (non-working version) no matter what.

    Here's what I did:
    • Uninstalled express, latest v 6.5
    • Installed older version of express
    • Disabled my network connection (to prevent update to express)
    • Launched express
    • Went in express settings and changed update to never (FYI even though I clicked never, it still wants to update everytime I launch express. That's why I had to disable network connection until the express was running).

    6. Enabled network
    7,. Connect garmin
    8. Register device and sync

    Hope this helps.

Just to finish off and say, yip this solved the problem for me as well. Obviously whatever garmin added to the latest express update
is causing our 305's problems. Must remember not to update now and keep the version 5.5 software download safely stored for future use.
Great thread guys, thx again !
  • Same issue and same solution for me on Windows 7. Version 6.8.1.0 works. It's not the first time something like this happens. Great thread though. I believe I agree with everything written here.

Can someone tell how to find old Express v5.5.0.0?
I have the same issue that latest Express SW on Win10 doesn't connect to my ForeRunner 305.
    Thanks

Just to update...after my pc auto-installed a rather large windows update, I found I could not sync/ communicate with garmin servers.
I installed the latest version of express and what do ya know, files transferring ok.
I'd say its not the last time I'm going to be seeing these kinds of issues...oh well...
