115 Intensity minutes for a 55 minute activity??

Intensity minutes are acting very strangely on my Fenix 5S.

I did my first workout of the week today, 55 minutes on the treadmill, with 5 minutes total in Zones 1 & 2, and 50 minutes total in Zones 3 & 4. From my understanding of intensity minutes, this should have resulted in 105 (2 * 50 vigorous + 5 moderate). Instead, the day is showing 115 total, broken down as 2 * 55 vigorous +5 moderate.

Last week was similarly odd, with one day showing 125 intensity minutes resulting from a 49 minute activity (broken down as 2 * 49 vigorous + 27 moderate).

Anyone have any insight as to what may be going on here?
  • You get credit for time after the workout as you're cooling down. You're heart rate is still elevated and being recorded even though you stopped the watch and the workout.
  • Well, I thought it could be that after I read your response, until this morning. Similar workout as yesterday, with 3 minutes in zone 1 & 2 and 53 minutes in zones 3 & 4.

And what did the watch give me for that for that 56 minute workout? 72 minutes of vigorous effort (16 more than I actually did!) plus 7 minutes of moderate effort. OK, maybe it's giving me some credit on the back side of the workoust in zones 1 & 2, but I have a cool down that's included in that 56 minutes, and I get off the treadmill with my heart rate at the bottom end of zone 2 about to fall into zone 1. There's no way that 16 minutes of extra vigorous effort can be correct.

So where does it stand for the week? 111 minutes of exercise have given me credit for 257 intensity minutes. That's just flat out wrong.

"In order to earn Intensity Minutes credit, you must reach or exceed 10 consecutive minutes where either your step count rate or heart rate is elevated above the threshold that is considered moderate intensity. Performing a more vigorous activity resulting in a high heart rate can double your credit minutes allowing you to meet your weekly goal faster."
