Reports - Progress Summary - Main & Sub Activity Types

Hi,

Apologies if I am missing something but on the Help menu the below text has been uploaded with regards to Reports: I unfortunately then do not understand why I/We have allocated records to sub Activity types all this time i.e hundreds of records, the reports on these sub Activity types was quite handy - but now useless - no where else as far as I know those alocations are being used? The Gear option is also extremely limited with regards to any form of data tracking/analysis?

Will the full reports on sub Activity Types option be brought back at all?

"
Activity types currently supported by Reports:
  • Running
  • Cycling
  • Swimming
  • Walking
  • FitnessEquipment
  • Other

Only activities with one of the above classifications will populate in the Reports section of Garmin Connect. If you would like to edit an existing activity to show in Reports, see Related Content.

  • Has anyone tried to contact Garmin, as in to speak to a customer support person, about this Report issue (loss of ability to produce reports on main and sub-activities). If not, how do we know that Garmin is monitoring this forum and the feedback that Garmin clients are providing? We could be "talking to ourselves!"

Firstly, the primary purpose of this discussion forum – provided and operated by Garmin – is for prospective and current users of Garmin devices in the health and fitness market to chat among ourselves. Secondly, Garmin staff replies to posts in the forum from time to time as they see fit, so we know someone in the company (and probably not limited to super moderators on staff) monitors this forum and read the posts, but I suggest you don't form or hold on to the misconceived idea that just because you as a customer wrote something here there is an obligation for the company to take note of it, much less respond to it or action your request or suggestion contained therein.
  • Running cadence fields are now blank.
  • Yes, I spoke with Garmin support. The individual was less than interested in hearing about the issue. They are trained to help customers address operational issues with devices and how to navigate the website. They did not appear to care at all about input on failing functions or poor Garmin changes. There is also a bad bug in the Edge 520 I talked with him about and the individual shrugged it off as me using the device wrong, unwilling to acknowledge that this is a problem.
  • I'm so disappointed in the loss of this "Other" activity detail in the Progress Summary that I WILL NOT PURCHASE OR SUBSCRIBE TO ANOTHER GARMIN product / service unless the reporting on actual activity types is restored. I'm on hold now with product support and will give my verbal feedback: Please, give me my data back, I trusted you! Also looking at ways to export data in Garmin connect - who knows that data they will loose next. ciq.forums.garmin.com/.../1379190.jpg

I'm confident that none of your data has been lost by Garmin, and the end-consumer issue here is not even one of having lost access to the data that is on Garmin's servers. It is the ability to produce particular reports from the underlying data that has been compromised, and therefore the end-consumer is unable to obtain desired information from the aggregation, stratification and analysis of the underlying with a click via Garmin Connect's user interfaces.

Also looking at ways to export data in Garmin connect - who knows that data they will loose next.
Can't you already export each of your activity records individually, either as the original FIT files as recorded by your Garmin device, or as TCX/GPX files, which you may then manipulate and analyse to your heart's content (using tools that are not provided by Garmin, and methods for which no tutorial is provided in the spirit of community service)?

  • And as others have said about this report: I want this Progress Summary report to report all on activity types, for example Trail Running and Road Running as separate activities as it did before. I talked to Garmin support about this change they made to this report making it useless, they suggested that I submit a request to have functionality restored at www.garmin.com/ideas which gets redirected to marketing info about products. Time to divest from Gamin unless this functionality is restored: Whats the point in buying their devices to collect data if they can't show you the data later.
  • Can't you already export each of your activity records individually,

Garmin Connects Export functionality is limited. I have almost 10 years of activity data in Garmin Connect, well over 3,000 activities. There is no support to bulk export all activities. I'm not going to spend hours exporting data in order to recreate this progress report manually every quarter which is how often I ran it before. I would use this report in the past to compare activity to date for a particular year to previous years. It was really the only report I ever ran. Garmin Connect is now not much use to me.

I thought you were expressing a grievance about not being able to extract data (on demand). As far as activity records go, exporting data as the original FIT files – with no post-processing, filtering or transformation by Garmin Connect – is about as complete as you're going to get.

Fair enough; that's your call to make.

Time to divest from Gamin unless this functionality is restored:
As a fellow consumer and Garmin customer, I wish you good luck in finding something that better suits your requirements in a neater package.

Whats the point in buying their devices to collect data if they can't show you the data later.
Again, there's a difference between the data collected, and derived information that you as the end-consumer want to see (especially without being distracted by all the bits that you just aren't interested in seeing). And, as anyone who has done enterprise architecture or IT architecture will tell you, the data collector building block is a necessity and a value-add element in its own right, irrespective of whether you need to then employ (potentially at additional cost, and irksome inconvenience and undesirable complexity) something else to perform data analysis and report presentation.

Adding myself to the list of very unhappy Garmin users as a result of the change of not being able to track sub categories in reports. Other activities is a very wide category and now it is completely useless. My main activity is Cross-Country Skiing and now this is impossible to follow which means Garmin is no longer an option for that category of Athletes which is quite a number of users in the Nordics.

I set up yearly targets for Cross Country Skiing, Running, Stand Up Paddling, Weightlifting, Crosstrainer and all but running are now impossible to follow progress for different time periods. However I also like to enter all other activities like Alpine Skiing, Golf, Paddling, Tennis etc which now completely destroys the tracking of Cross Country skiing.

Have been a happy Garmin user since 2009, unfortunately lost my Fenix 2 watch this summer while swimming so need to by a new device. Was totally in to buying a new Garmin, most likely the new Fenix 5 plus, due to the fact that I have easy access to my data and can track everything over different time periods for comparisons. With this change the advantage with Garmin and ease of data access is gone, so will not by a new Garmin since I cannot follow and track my main activity. So will have to start to look at alternatives, like Polar who is recommended by many other cross country skiers...pse fix this issue Garmin
