Can I see Real Time EPOC on a Garmin watch? I currently use a Suunto T6 which I have planned to replace by a modern device. The Suunto T6 displays Real Time EPOC and I use is to pace my sessions. I have tried to find the answer in this forum and asked some developers of applications for the Fenix 5, but so far nobody could help me out.
EPOC is taken into account to calculate the Training Effect (aerobic and anaerobic). There are many Connect IQ data fields which can show the Training Effect in real time while recording an activity. I personally find it a really intuitive and useful data.
Byron84. Thanks. The problem is that TE is rather rough compared to EPOC. In the range of TE 3 to 5 it takes about 10 Epoc units per 0.1 unit of TE. I use EPOC for pacing my training. When I want to make a 20km bike ride and want to reach an EPOC of 140 (which is an TE of about 3.6-3.7 in Fitnesslevel 9), I have to yield 7 units of EPOC per kilometer and I control my speed and Heart Rate to get that. When I use TE for that, it takes about 1.5 kilometer to see whether I am on the right track, where EPOC informs me every 100-200 mtr whether I should increase or decrease my speed (and Heart Rate) a bit or that my speed and HR are OK. Another advantage of EPOC is that it decreases again when you have to slow down for traffic or stop for traffic lights or fixing a puncture and give you good information tot pick up the training again in order to push up the TE again after that dip. TE remains at it peak level and it is hard to tell how far you are from increasing it again. So far it looks like Garmin does not have a way to show real time EPOC on the watch and it seems that I have to go for the Suunto Spartan or the new Suunto 9
