Activity level and fitness watch

So, if someone wears a fitness watch with HR 24/7 and record all activities, should the activity level be set to 0? I go by the assumption that activity level is to 'adjust' the daily calories and since fitness watch with HR calculates daily steps and heart rate, there is no need to 'adjust' the daily calories since the watch will automatically make the adjustments, Am I off the track?
  • As far as I'm aware, neither the Garmin device nor the cloud-based Garmin Connect service will automatically adjust your Activity Class, regardless of whether you think there is already sufficient data you (or your Garmin device) have provided for some intelligent analysis and adjustments to be performed programmatically.
  • As you change activity level, the daily calories value is modified accordingly. For example, at an activity level of 0, it sets it at 1860. At an activity level of 8, daily calories becomes 2340. Since this is the base calories, any calculated calories from activities and steps are added to that value, hence why if you have a fitness tracker with HR and you track all your activities, I think the activity level should be 0.

    I'll hazard a guess that, at the Activity Level of 0, Garmin Connect assumes/uses a multiplier of 1.2x to determine the user's TDEE from his/her BMR – which in turn is estimated from height, weight, age and gender information supplied by the user, through means other than the activity tracker's sensors or firmware) – and a larger multiplier (say, 1.5x) for higher Activity Level settings to account for EPOC but without adding active energy expenditure during exercise (including both steps – possibly above a preset threshold for what is considered basic or minimal for the average user in a particular class – and timed activities) that is separately recorded.

    That does not imply that the fitness tracker will assess your Activity Level and/or update the corresponding in your Garmin Connect account automatically and programmatically, on reviewing the (step count, sleep, HR, etc.) data it ‘tracked’ or gathered.

    I think it's still up to the user to make a considered assessment of his/her lifestyle and choose the appropriate Activity Level setting accordingly and manually, and continue to monitor any changes from the tracked activity data that Garmin will present in numeric or graphical format. Other than the features based on technology licensed from Firstbeat and are implemented directly on the devices (as opposed to the cloud-based Garmin Connect service), Garmin Connect does not provide (or add value) much by way of analysis or assessment, except for providing (total, average, maximum and minimum, etc.) statistics over aggregated data supplied by the user.
