sync issues/activity files

hi, I've been trying to update new software while my watch (645 + music) is connected to my computer and the Garmin connect is open. i couldn't update since it says my device memory is full and I should upload my activity files to Garmin connect. How do I remove these files from my device so I can update the software? I did connected the device to the Garmin connect (through Bluetooth) app on my Iphone and sync all the activities, thus I can see them in the app. Is there anything else I should do, or am I doing something wrong?
