Course creation for road cycling ... but course is going down cycle paths and tracks

Hi,

I am trying to create a course in Garmin connect. I select an activity type as 'Road Cycling', i select a start point and the next point that i wish to travel to, and i am expecting it to stay to the roads, but it is routing down through off-road tracks which are not suitable for a road bike. I have 'Popularity routing' and 'Follow roads' but they both seem to go off-road.

Any suggestions on how i can get the routing to stick to roads?

Cheers
  • Post exact start and end point

  • One thing i did notice was that it seemed to route ok, for the first point after the start, as you can see just after the 3km marker, but i then from the 3km marker to the 6km marker it is all off road.
  • Post exact start and end point
  • I get that sometimes, especially if the track is almost a road. I just select smaller steps along the way while building the route to ensure the route stays on the road. Can actually be quite challenging over here, especially if you don't know which roads are sealed and which are dirt, never mind trying to identify the tracks from the road.

Look at these. I'm lucky that I know the black line is part of a rail-trail otherwise Garmin would have me going along it. And that's with the drawing method set to 'Follow Roads'
  • When creating a Course you have three routing options; Freehand (which means draw straight lines between - often referred to as Direct Routing), Popularity (go where people say they have bicycled in activities upload to GC and also, intrinsically also means Follow Roads) and Follow Roads.

Follow Roads doesn't mean 'only go on roads'. Think of it as the opposite of Freehand. So, it kind or means 'Not freehand, follow anything routable for Road Bikes'.

And in Bracknell you are being routed onto a Cycle Path, as indicated on the OSM at https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/370975617 and being asphalted. Perfect for biking!

So, that is what is happening. Other experts that know far more that me might chip in at this point!
  • I have this problem which has only surfaced recently. Despite wanting to stay on roads I am being led on to footpaths across fields with stiles etc. the only option is to go back and figure out a different route using my phone. Doing it bit by bit only works if you know the area but I want to use my Garmin for areas I don't know

  • In Garmin Connect Web, you can select the option Follow Roads, I did not see that option in GC Mobile, though.

You can also plan the course with an external tool, app, or service offering a finer tuning of the parameters, and then importing it to Garmin Connect (or even placing it directly on the device, if you get it in the FIT file format)
