Goals - They are so limited at the moment

I'd like the ability to add goals like:
  • Run a 30km in one go.
  • Run a sub 18 minute 5km.
  • Cycle 40km in under an hour.
Currently the goals are basic run this distance in total, or run for this amount of time over the course of a year.
  • None of the examples (or achievements) you gave need to be tracked for progress (towards a set goal) over a number of timed activities or a number of days, and so does not fit with the idea of goal tracking feature in Garmin Connect.

Now, there is a Slipstream badge that can be awarded in the new regime, for cycling 40km in one hour (or less). There's also a badge for running a half marathon in a single timed activity, and another one for running 50km. However, as a user, it is not your place to decide what is worthy of recognition and acknowledgement in that regard in Garmin Connect.
  • I totally disagree. I've ran many half marathons, so a badge of "run a half marathon" is pretty useless to me. A goal to beat my PB within 2018 is a goal/target/achievement i want to set myself. Garmin currently doesn't offer this function.

Same goes for the cycling target, what if I want to beat 55mins, or 50mins? The badge system does not fulfill this.

As a user who's spent more money than I should have on Garmin products, I feel that I have at least a voice as to what is worthy of a suggested 'Feature Request'. Or as a Master, should we take your opinion as gospel, and close this side of the forum? Seems like you're not interested in a feature that you may personally not see as useful.

    Try http://www8.garmin.com/contactUs/ideas/

You're raising it in a primarily user-to-user discussion forum. I'm giving you my feedback as a peer, not to prevent further discussion, but simply to let others know what just another member in the user community thinks. We're not all here with an agreed common goal to support each other's wants and suggestions blindly, instead of discussing it including giving negative feedback as we see fit.

Seems like you're not interested in a feature that you may personally not see as useful.
I'm not interested in having access to such a feature because I don't see it as either useful, or in line with tracking cumulative progress, which is what Garmin's goal-tracking mechanism is about from what I surmise. However, I am interested in discussing suggested ideas with my peers – and that means giving my honest feedback – if one of them is interested enough to raise it in this forum; that's why I'm a regular participant here, with enough posts to earn me that silly title of ‘Master’ I didn't choose for myself. Who knows, even though Garmin staff may not acknowledge and respond to the vast majority of posts here, they may come to see that there is no unanimous support or agreement among product users for a given idea and the reasons why.
  • I totally agree with JonathanBellman. I miss these kind of goals as well, and I think such possibilities would fit perfectly with Garmin's "Beat yesterday" slogan. Such goals are what keeps me motivated to keep exercising and improving, and I would love the ability to "formalize" and track the goals and progress in Connect!

As for ASmugDill's "contributions" to the feature request discussions in general: What is your problem? To me it seems as your default response to any idea posted here is to search for a way to tell people how stupid their ideas are.
  • First of all: ASmugDill has every right to post his opinion. And since his default opinion is well known to most of us, we don't even have to read his posts to know his opinion on a given subject.

Back to the topic at hand:
I guess we can divide goals into 3 types:
    • In a given time frame, reach x amount of parameter y.
Example: Over 7 days, burn 4200 Active Calories.
    • Before a given date, reach target x.
Example: Before 1st. of June, be able to run 5 km in less than 30 minutes.
Or: Before 1st. of June, get your weight below 80 kg.
    • Reach target x.
Example: Get your weight below 80 kg.
Currently, Garmin only support goals of type 1. With exception of weight goals which are type 3.

I fully support the idea of implementing goals of type 2, with some graphical feedback on your current trend towards reaching this goal. It could for example be a graph showing date on the x-axis and your fastest 5 km times so far on the y-axis, together with a target trend showing the improvement rate necessary to reach your goal.

I was quite astonished when I set a weight goal and did not have the option of setting a date for that goal so I could see such a target trend in my weight diagram.

Also, goals of type 1 could be improved vastly:
    • Recurring goals
      Do not exist.
Garmin announced on Twitter in 2009 (!) that it was on their roadmap:
      https://twitter.com/garminfitness/status/4629212881
    • Goal parameters
We could have a lot more goal parameters to choose from, for example:
      • Time spent in HR Zone x
      • Time spent in outdoor activities
      • Accumulated altitude increase

  • AllanOlesen67: I agree to literally everything you just said. Well put!
  • You explained things far better than I did. Hoora! haha. Well explained Allan :)
