Repeatable badge for half marathon

Hello,

I very like new Garmin badge system (old one was really ludicrous). I have only one request regarding half marathon badge. Please change it to repatable badge. I believe that there is much people for who is Half marathon big challange (including me) and it is worth of badge every time. After collect of all (for me) possible badges, I would like to have something for what I can fight every year (I am not interesting in repeatable challene badges). Thank you.
  • And there are others who run half marathons more than once a week for training, and 10kms, and 5kms etc. At what point do you decide to stop awarding multiple badges? For some even a 5km is a massive challenge; it's all relative, it's all worthy of a badge. But more than one?
  • Dajko84, if you feel completing a half marathon, in terms of total distance travelled (irrespective of pace or speed) for a timed activity, is “worth of badge every time”, then by all means please go and buy/make/award yourself one in every instance. What you cannot reasonably demand is either agreement from others (including Garmin) that such an effort – especially your effort, for the purposes of this exchange, but of course it also applies to any other runner's effort – is worthy of recognition by them, or some token acknowledgement to appease you even if they don't agree.
  • Have the badge awarded to activities with the 'Event Type' changed to Special Event or Race.
This will eliminate any confusion with training or fitness runs.

And yes I consider doing Park Run as an Special Event although its 5kms.

There are those that run marathon distances as training/recreational runs on a weekly basis and the marathon badge is repeatable?

Don't think the OP demanded, pretty sure they requested. What harm is there in asking?
  • imw, there is no harm in asking, even though the ‘place’ to ask Garmin is http://www8.garmin.com/contactUs/ideas/

This is a discussion forum, so we're discussing such a feature request (if) made to Garmin, and I personally am interested in the framing and thinking behind a feature request, as well as the relationship dynamics in play, so I'm discussing that with my peers (fellow Garmin customers and Garmin Connect users).

Interesting that the Ideas section wasn't mentioned to the OP?

Personally, as a software developer and my industry experience, I would argue the concept of badges - as a whole - is an idea and how they function are features. Therefore a request to change their function is a feature request. But I guess that's individual interpretation. Cheers.

You are right philipshambrook and ASmugDill. During training on my first Marathon I have collected a lot of half matathon distances. Anyway I do not see reason why Maratnhon badge should be repeatable and lower distances not. Solution from my POV is easy - make system: new badge for each distance every year (f.e. badge "Run 5 km in 2019"). In my opinion I would cancel repeatable badges at all and keep only point system for the badges. In the end of the day, it is only irrelevant feature for more fun with garmin connect and i like it anyway :)

  • The repeatable is definitely something of relativity - the only repeatable distances are considered LONG events by almost anyone's standard. Even Ultra runners don't go out and run 26miles very often.

Similar with biking, the 50mile badge isn't repeatable - it falls in line with what would be considered a common ride amongst serious bikers (although for many riders and non-riders... "whoa, Long!". However the 100 mile is... repeatable, few bikers would consider a Century a common/easy distance. Also it is for many folks is considered the benchmark equiv to a Marathon run.

So I can clearly see Garmin is thinking.... in that regards.

I definitely could see the benefit behind allowing repeats annually or something. Especially, if it was a PR for that distance. Or the PR badge in general! Like someone said "Beat Yesterday" slogan - seems like it should really be front and center in their activity badges.
