add features for coach/trainer

Hello Garmin developpers,

In my running community I'm helping some guys on training (give advice, plan some training activities ...). Today I can see the result through Garmin Connect if I connected with them :-).
But it will be a big improvement if through GC i can do the following :
=> directly put the planning in their GC calendar
=> create or copy workout directly to their account and even send to their device
=> able to compare the performance between my communities ....
=> .....

For that to create a specific sharing link by adding "COACH"

Now here the last questions :
=> do you think it s a good idea ?
=> do you think we can have such features (or more :-) ) in the coming releases ?

Anyway thanks for all (I like Garmin devices and also GC)

  • yaya_95: So how is Garmin expected to ‘monetise’ or generate additional revenue (coming from the wallets of the product user base) from all that?
  • ASmugDill: Well, if you apply that logic I guess the development of most of the individual features in the Connect ecosystem is plain waste and not generating any direct revenue.

However, you need to take the whole set of features into consideration, and personally I think a such feature that yaya_95 suggests might add something to the Connect ecosystem that potentially could generate more sales of Garmin devices. Just imagine a running community such as yaya_95's choosing the Garmin platform over any of their competitors just because of the possibilty for the coach to easily administrate and distribute workout plans across all athletes directly in the app. (And then analyse results afterwards!)
  • ASmugDill : for me the added value for Garmin is to sell more devices. Then as SAHO wrote : we have to think on the full ecosystems. When it s come the time to choose a new GPS watch; always there are some question to me about the brand : SUNTO, POLAR,TOMTOM or Garmin ... and with such SW features we can push for Garmin.

By the way, I didn't check if there are already such feature provided by others. But I don't think so.

  • Why should Garmin provide coaches/trainers the ability to run their business essentially for free? Do like other coaches do and use a paid service like TrainingPeaks.com or SportTracks.mobi, passing on the cost as appropriate.

Of course such a service would add something, but I don't expect it should be provided for free.
  • philipshambrook: I agree to some extent if you are talking about using such feature in a commercial setting. However I was imagining it used more in volunteer communities for youths etc.

That said; Nothing in Connect are free even if we don't pay anything for Connect directly. We pay for Connect trought our purchase of devices, and the better Garmin makes the Connect ecosystem, the more likely we are to buy Garmin devices next time around.

For comparison; I wonder how much profit Garmin are generating that could be directly adressed to their new (in my opinion) silly gimmick of Badges.
  • However I was imagining it used more in volunteer communities for youths etc.

Oh right, so volunteer communities for youths are going to provide targeted teenaged beneficiaries with Garmin wearable devices, that are ‘advanced‘ enough in the Forerunner and vívo (forget about fenix!) product lines that support custom workouts (which may be of type Run, as opposed to being of type Custom), to take home and register against their individual Garmin Connect accounts? Are these communities also going to ensure the teenagers have compatible personal computing devices, on which to run either the Garmin Express application or one of the Garmin Connect Mobile apps, and adequate access to Internet connectivity as well? Even so, why would anyone reasonably expect a for-profit organisation to contribute towards it (without it being a sponsorship deal with select groups that will offer the best marketing exposure, and bang for the buck for the company's effective spend)?

Or am I mistaken as to what you meant, and you're imagining volunteer communities run by mums and dads of socioeconomically privileged youths? If that's the case, they can damn well pay Garmin (or whomever) for access to an IT platform on which to provide coaching (including scheduling workouts, and providing flexible analytics beyond what Garmin Connect offers today) as well.
  • Sigh.

My intention was not to scope the target audience for such a feature, so sorry for bringing that into the discussion.

    My point was simply this:
Why should the direct profit requirements for the suggested feature be greater than for other excisting features in Connect?
