Splitting a .fit file and re uploading XML help

Hello

I have spent a good few hours searching all over the internet for a solution to my silliness and have so far found some similar problems, but no solutions that fix mine.

Yesterday I completed a Duathlon, but having not done a multisport event in a while, instead of hitting the lap button when going through transition, I hit the enter button, thus it did not record as a multisport event, but one long run. This has messed up my Garmin data.

I imported the file in to online fitfilerepair tool and split it in to the three separate sections. I then went to upload them back to Garmin. I deleted the original and it uploaded the first run, but not the bike or second run as it says it is a duplicate file.

So I found that I needed to change the ID number for the events so it sees them as separate events. I opened up the files in an XML reader as suggested, but I have no idea what I am looking at or what to change or how to physically do it.

I have read on a lot of forum posts how to do it, and in theory I know it is simple, but I have no idea what I am looking at in XML to know how to change it. Can anybody help? This is the first time I have messed it up

I have a Garmin Forerunner 920XT

Thank you :)

    Hi Pip,

Attach your .fit file in a reply to this message and let me know what your splits were. I can then convert it into a multisport activity for you.

    cheers

  • Hi Mike

Really? That would be amazing, only I open the XML file and I have no idea what I am looking at. I tried to find help online to explain what I was looking at and I just got more confused.

It started with a road run of 7km and finished with a road run of 5km and the road bike is whatever is left in the middle as they had to change the route at the last minute due to an accident on one of the roads, so they were not actually sure the distance of the bike. Looking at my file it should be about 19.36km

    Thank you so much :)

(Just got back from a three week trip around Kiwi land and I didn't want to leave! You are so lucky to live there)

    hi Pip,

I need to know your time splits are...I've never done an event yet where the course distances were a 100% spot on :)

    cheers

  • Hi Mike

I do not really know what the time splits were because it paused the activity rather than splitting it up, my fault completely. I know it is 5km at the end as it is the local Parkrun route.

I did split the three stages using the fitfiletool online tool and have attached those, and this is the official time from the results page. [TABLE="border: 0, cellpadding: 0, cellspacing: 0"]

    hi Pip,

It looks like you're using smart recording on your device..have a look at this pic and you can see that there wasn't any data recorded between 00:44:37 and 00:45:32 which covered the entire period of your T1 and part of your bike so it means that your T1 time won't display correctly in the file.

    Give this file a try.

    cheers

  • Hi Mike

Thank you so much for trying, but it still imports as one long run at 31.36 km rather than three events. I'm not too fussed about the transition time which is why I split it in to the three .fit files, to try and do it separately. But thank you so much for trying for me

    Many Thanks

    hi Louise,

My mistake - I sent you the link to the scratch file and not the finished file - give this file a try.

    cheers

  • Hi Mike

Amazing! That worked perfectly. Thank you so much for helping me. I wish I understood how you did it, but the XML is just so much text! I wouldn't know where to start! Now all I have to do is figure out why Garmin Connect won't delete the original activity. I click on delete and it disappears, but then when I go back in later, it has magically reappeared! Another problem for another day!

Thank you so much. I really appreciate it :)
