You can zoom the map, but if the entire activity does not fit in the map display, then the map won't follow the replay dot. I found no way of adjusting the replay speed. Actually, since I discovered this feature I kept wondering what is it for. I cannot find any sensible purpose for it, the way it's implemented.

You can zoom in on the map prior to starting the replay.
and also slowing down the replay speed?
You can either manually pause the playback as required to allow your attention to catch up, or slide the mouse pointer along the horizontal axis of one of the charts below the map to manually drive the playback, but no, you cannot alter the automatic continuous playback speed.

I think it's a pretty good way to help me visualise how I actually negotiated the spaghetti-like route (full of impromptu turning decisions) I took during the timed run.
You can slowly scroll the elevation panel just below the map with your mouse to see the white dot move around at the speed you like. A bit jumpy depending on how you use the mouse but better than a kick in the pants.
