BPM and HRV differ - does anyone know the filter/algorithm?

Hi there, I'm a cyclist with AF.
I've been using the HRV data recorded by my 920XT to monitor AF episodes and other arrhythmia issues.

I'd like to understand the difference between the BPM displayed by my 920XT and the actual R-R intervals (recorded as HRV in the .fit), so I can better manage my AF on the bike rather than later when I view the data on the couch.

I'm guessing there is a digital filter, a missing beat detector and an ectopic beat detector.

Can anyone tell me the filter/algorithm? or point me in a direction that might get me the information?

thanks,
Matthew
  • Sorry, I have no input on the algorithm used. But are you sure you are not "over-expecting" the complexity - or rather the analytic capability - of the BPM algorithm? I would expect it to be just a running average of the intervals during the last X seconds or for the last Y strokes. Perhaps with some simple logic for filling out the gap if one interval is suddenly double of the average.
  • You have to keep in mind that these devices are sports watches and activity trackers not actual medical devices. The testing and certification process to get a gadget approved as a medical device would make them much more expensive.

Anyone who wrote a CIQ app that tried to make real time determinations about AF based on the data received from a Garmin device would probably open themselves up to all kinds of legal action if somebody relied on it and it didn't work. I don't know what Garmin's policy for approving apps is but I'm pretty sure if they were aware of an app making such a claim they wouldn't let it on the store.
  • Sorry this topic is a little stale -
FYI - I had an Atrial Ablation 6 months back - pulmonary vein isolation.
It appears to be successful - I've been slowly ramping training load over 4 months and doing OK.
I've been checking the beat-to-beat data with Kubios and there have been a couple of very short bursts of arrhythmia,
but nothing to worry about or slow me down.
