Running Index?

Hi. Does Garmin have a Running Index parameter similar to Polar? Would be nice with something similar which can rank individual runs based on pace, HR, distance etc.....
  • You are talking about Vo2Max, basically - although Polar calls it running index.
    Check section Scientific background - https://support.polar.com/en/support/tips/Running_Index_feature#

    And yes, Garmin have that.
  • VO[sub]2[/sub]max is an attribute of the user, not of a particular activity (during which an estimate of the user's VO[sub]2[/sub]max may be taken), so logically pbjorgen could not have been talking about a metric of that type. Training Effect (which is supported on the FR235), perhaps.
  • I just want a way of ranking my runs and progress. I came across the Relative Running Economy formula (below), which I use for now. I mainly run on a treadmill at winter time (live in snowy Norway.......). My VO2max doesn't get updated when I use Indoor Run on my FR235. The approach below is probably very simplified.

    Relative Running Economy:
    Total Beats = (Average Heart Rate – Resting Heart Rate) * Time in Minutes
    Work Per Mile = Total Beats / Distance in Miles
    Efficiency = 1 / Work Per Mile * 100,000

    I guess that you are right - the load of the individual workout is more related to the training effect (TE) in Garmin terminology. However, the running index referred to by pbjorgen I still maintain is another name in the Polar world for Vo2Max - when looking at the description on the Polar pages and how it's explained I can't see that it can be anything else.

    OK, then the answer to pbjorgen's question is simply NO. VO[sub]2[/sub]max is not calculated automatically after every run tracked by a Garmin fitness wearable device that supports the feature (such as the FR235, which pbjorgen has), even if the user does outdoor road running exclusively. (It is known that VO[sub]2[/sub]max is not estimated when using the Run Indoor and Trail Run profiles.) If pbjorgen wants to rank every run, instead of just seeing development of his (maximal aerobic) running performance over time, then VO[sub]2[/sub]max is definitely not the metric to use in the Garmin world.
