Display of record performance for each activity

I cannot imagine this being a new request or that I'm the only one interested in this.

If you run/ride/swim a personal record it gets put on the Personal Record page, but there you only have view of your all-time PR.

Since the activity is recorded and these record distances are measured for comparison to determine whether you have a new PB, why can't these measures be displayed for each activity? That way you know how far off your overall record you were. Or how you compared to previous attempts to evaluate progress, esp like after injury or such.

Furthermore - why is record distances so limited, esp in cycling?

  • There are fitness and/or athletic performance analysis services and applications that will perform post-processing on activity records to determine the fastest 1km-, 5km-, 10km-stretches, etc. for each record, but Garmin Connect is not that. If you want that capability, then it's up to you to identify (and acquire, including but not necessarily at additional expense on your part) what can fulfil your particular requirements.

Furthermore - why is record distances so limited, esp in cycling?

Because it's usually up to the individual device to detect achievement of (one or more) personal records in the course of recording a timed activity, and so all the distances for which detection can occur are preset in the device model's firmware, and not an arbitrary list of user settings to suit the individual user's fancy.

  • I can understand the last point, though.. why the heck 40km is chosen for cycling is really baffling.

But the first point remains. The device records the activity. It measures whether you beat a PR upon saving. Therefore it knows your run's (as example) comparative times for best 1k, 5k, 10k, half, marathon, 50k for the activity. Why not just plonk those values down on a section in your activity? And yes, I for one have other sources for more detailed comparisons. But why not just display the data in the source feed as well, where you have got the data to start off with? Just for the metrics available, not asking for expansion on that. Just those that are already being compared in every activity.

I don't know whether the FIT file format actually has fields for such values in timed activity records.

But why not just display the data in the source feed as well, where you have got the data to start off with?

The answer to ‘why’ is that there is no need to do so. Whether the wearable device can write such values into a FIT file (as the format definition stands now) is a secondary concern.
  • I can help you with a workaround, though not a solution:
If you create a free Endomondo account and link it to your Garmin Connect account, you can view record distances for each recorded activity. You will not have to do anything to keep your data updated, but you will of course have to log into two different websites to view your activity.

Another advantage of viewing the activity in Endomondo is that you can get an individual lap or a record distance highlighted on the map just by hovering your mouse above it in the list. So you can not only see how fast your fastest km was - you can also see where on the route you did your fastest km.
