Vivoactive 3 not receiving Hangouts and WeChat notifications

Believe me that I have done many experiments and researches on this issue...

My set up:
- European version Samsung Galaxy Note 8 (latest official software) - I live in Europe.
- Chinese version Vivoactive 3 (latest SW version 2.80) - heck the English/International version garmin watches does not support Chinese characters, why would any modern smartwatch do this...
- Latest Garmin Connect app installed from GooglePlay

I am not a tech noob, and I know what I am doing. I have all the obvious settings right. All of my app notifications work perfectly except for Google Hangouts and WeChat (a very popular Chinese messaging and social app). I also tried various combos of things, like switching the phone OS language between Chinese and English, watch language to English and Chinese, etc.; I have reinstalled Connect app, Hangouts and WeChat; I have restarted phone and watch; I have reset the watch to factory; I have registered Garmin Connect account inside and outside China region to test; I have done lots of things...

Interesting though, if I connect my English version vivoactive (1st gen), the notification for Hangouts and WeChat works! (though it does not show Chinese characters)

Can anyone help me please! This is mad.
  • Can anyone confirm if his/her vivoactive 3 can or cannot receive notifications for hangouts? either english or Chinese version is fine. That would be very much appreciated!


  • I too have been unable to receive Hangouts notifications on my Vivoactive 3 since they updated Garmin Connect Mobile to version 4.2. I still do not get Hangouts notifications with version 4.2.2 either. They seem to have completely refactored Notifications in the 4.2 update. I can now enable and disable each apps notification delivery to the Vivoactive 3 successfully, except for Hangouts.
  • Thanks Mr. Christopher, really good to know that I am not the only one having this issue! So I guess Garmin needs to fix the phone app.
  • I can confirm that using connect 4.1.11 the notification works fine. Since I bought the watch when 4.2 was released, I only get the impression that it never worked.
  • Yep, I don't receive hangout notifications on 4.2 either.
  • It's the same thing for me. (Vivoactive 3 fw:2.90 et Huawei P10 Lite Android 7.0)

    Since the update who activated all notifications of all applications, I disabled all I didn't want and now I have only Phone calls, SMS and Agenda notifications working...I tryed to pair again my phone and my watch, to remove an to install again the app but no change.

    I hope the next update will correct this issue...

    I have the same problem since Connect Mobile 4.2. OnePlus 3, Android 8.0.0.

    I've been in touch with support but they're ignoring everything I tell them about the problem and going through the standard "problems pairing" script.

    Apps where notifications work:
    - Gmail
    - Google Now
    - Google Calendar
    - Clock (the default clock app on my OnePlus 3)

    Apps where notifications don't work:
    - Google Hangouts
    - Pushbullet

    I'm pretty sure that if the Connect Mobile developers were told about the problem they could fix it quite quickly but first support have to waste weeks of everyone's time. Frustrating.
  • Garmin Connect Mobile 4.3 updated on my phone over night. This does not yet seem to resolve the Hangouts notification to the Vivoactive 3 yet.
  • I installed the 4.3 too, and I can also confirm the Hangouts notification still does not work. Though the notification for WeChat seems to be fixed... at least some improvement.

    The 4.3 release solved a part of notification for some applications like Strava, but Hangout notifications are not yet working...
