Enable sync to Google Fit

I can't be the only one who uses additional apps to track various fitness and health aspects. It would simplify things if Connect would sync activity and even step data to Google Fit. This would provide a single pane of glass for an overall view, the detailed data would still live in Connect.

When will be this syncronization with Google Fit available?

I'd also like to know what is blocking the sync to Google Fit feature (and also whether there is any indication anyone is looking at this forum and it's not just a venting place)
  • It seems that Garmin Devs don't seem to look at the forums...this is probably one of the most requested features for a very long time, and there does not seem to be any indication that this is even been taken into account for either future development or just create a post saying why they would not implement this..
  • It doesn't "seem" that way. We are regularly reminded that this is a user-to-user forum.

Google only need to pay Garmin $5k for the Connect API and they only need to request the Health API. I don't not get why Google don't pay it or why Garmin just give it out. It's about out customers, both needs to get it. Is not complicated.

  • Google and Garmin need to get their act together and decide who is responsible to drive the integration effort.

I reached out to Garmin support on this, and they dump the responsibility entirely on Google. What they don't seem to understand, or aren't willing to accept, is that many users will dump their fitness trackers if they don't interoperate with the apps that we want. I know I don't plan on buying another fitness tracker that won't work with Google Fit. If Garmin hasn't gotten their act together by the time my current Garmin vivosmart dies, I'm jumping to a different fitness tracker manufacturer.
  • Garmin doesn't really have an incentive to do so. It's unfortunate to see so many walled gardens. But at least in this case there are ways like with Strava to sync activities to Google Fit after you sync from Garmin. I've complained about this before with Garmin, and I used to work there! ;-)

Walled gardens are a great way to make me dump a company.
  • I've already begun looking around for other smartwatches that have full Google Fit integration. I have a great Garmin watch, but on the long run, I will have to switch to Fossil or Ticwatch or such, simply because I want my smartwatch to feed data into Google Fit.
  • Google Fit is dedicated to coaching you to lead a healthier and more active lifestyle, and making healthy behavior changes easier to achieve. In the last year, we redesigned Google Fit with new activity goals based on the American Heart Association and World Health Organization physical activity recommendations, added guided breathing and home screen widgets, and hosted a New Year 30-day challenge. As we continue to focus efforts on adding new capabilities that enhance the mobile and smartwatch Google Fit experience, we’ll be turning off this Google Fit website on 19 March 2019. To keep tracking your activities and get coaching toward your health goals, install the Fit app on your Android phone or Wear OS smartwatch.
  • If you want to be able to sync Garmin Connect info (steps, activities, weight, sleep and heart rate) then use Health Sync (available in Google Play Store for Android users). I've been communicating closely with the developer and I can confidently say absolutely fantastic app! It's a paid app (very small price though). I've tried a few others to sync my Garmin data to Samsung Health and Google Fit (SyncMyTracks, FitnessSyncer). None work as good as this. Whilst historical data from Garmin isn't currently available (yet - the developer says he is working on this), all required data syncs seamlessly from Garmin to Samsung Health and Google Fit, in real time (e.g. when you sync steps with GC, it updates SH and GF straight away). It's also now possible to sync GC to SH AND GF simultaneously. Support is fantastic, if ever required. Best sync app for GC to SH and GF hands down!
