Connect & Advance Running/Cycling Data

Sorry if this has been asked before but I can’t seem to find the answer here in the forum or looking through various reviews. I’m considering buying a Fenix 5 and also buying an Edge 1030. I’m looking to use the Edge 1030 to cycle which I do 2-3 times a week, while using the Fenix 5 to run which I also do 3-4 times a week, but I have a few questions regarding how the workouts from each device integrates and works within Garmin Connect to give me an overall view of my health and training.

I like the various training science stats like the VO2 Max, Lactate Threshold, Training Status, Training Load, and Recovery Time that the Fenix 5 and Edge 1030 offer. My first question is, can the VO2 Max, Lactate Threshold, Training Load, Training Status, recovery time, etc… stats from a workout be viewed within the Garmin Connect, or is it only available to view on the device itself? Since I don’t have either device I’m not sure if those stats show up in connect.

Second, if those stats sync up to Garmin Connect, does Garmin Connect compile those advance training stats from the various workouts on say the Fenix 5 and Edge 1030 to provide an overall view of my VO2 Max, Lactate Threshold, Training Load, Training Status, and Recovery time? I’ve read that the advance training stats and workouts from the Fenix 5 won’t sync to the Edge 1030 device, and vice versa; so the edge 1030 doesn’t know how hard I ran the day before, and vice versa the Fenix 5 doesn’t know that I had an easy bike ride yesterday. My hope is that the Garmin Connect App and website compiles the data from all the various workouts from the two devices to give me my overall view of how I’m doing; whether I’m improving and raising my VO2 Max, where I’m at for the week with regards to my Training Status or Training load, if it complies the various workouts to let me know my exact recovery time.
  • There is no integration or consolidation of data for analysis. Garmin Connect itself is not an analytics package, and calculations for all the ‘powered by Firstbeat’ features are done only on the devices, of which the features are marketed as selling points. You can see your VO[sub]2[/sub]max and Lactate Threshold on reports and widgets in Garmin Connect, but if you have multiple devices that calculate and submit results for the same metric to GC, then the most recent entry will overwrite what was there before. I don't know about Training Status and Training Load, and I have never seen the results of Recovery Advisor anywhere in GC myself.
  • Thank you for the quick replay. That's what I suspected and a little disappointing that neither the Connect app or the website can compile the data from both devices into one single stat that workers across all Garmin devices.

At this point I'm thinking of only investing in a Fenix 5 instead of getting that and also the Edge since all my data would be analysed on a single device; but I really don't want to use the watch for cycling, I'd rather have a dedicated computer for cycling. I don't like the fact that I can't really sync the data from the fenix 5 with the edge and vise versa, or that fact that Connect does compile the date from the two into a single figure. While I do understand certain certain running and cycling statistic are specific to the device and the workout such as Training Effect, Training Status, Performance Condition, etc... there are some stats like Training Load that I wish Garmin could compile from the two devices to provide me a single figure.

Could anyone maybe share their experience with using both a dedicated Garmin bike computer like an edge and also a dedicated Garmin wrist watch like the Fenix or Forerunner, and specifically how you use analyze data and work around the fact that the two devices really don't talk to each other?
  • I'm also very disappointed that Garmin Connect does not analyze the compiled data from mpx devices. For a multisport athlete swimming, biking and running, training load and training effect analyzed separately is completely useless. For example, I can go for a hard 100 mile bikeride and still be told by the Forerunner 935 that I can go out for a hard run or that my training load is decreasing if I run easy while on a bike focused camp.

I suggest that if all workouts (including cycling with heart rate and power) are uploaded to Garmin Connect, the online platform should calculate training load and status, show it online in one of the report widgets and sync it back to the watch via the app.
The data is already on the Garmin Connect site and would give an accurate assessment of training load and status.
Thank you for your help in advance.
